COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Looking forward to a depressing holiday? Here is liquid consolation. This 8% bittersweet chocolate stout is the best you could hope for in these dark times. Come to think of it, considering how bad you’ve been this year, this little coal-black gem is more than you deserve for Christmas. Concocted by the vastly talented -- though, frankly, a little too cheery -- Peter Scholey, Lump of Coal will be hitting shelves and better pubs in November 2004.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a beige head that left a thin layer on top. Chocolate, dried fruit, nuts, coffee. Pretty good smooth balance of alcohol, body, acidity, and sweetness.

Amazing how I can not get this in Shropshire, but found it in California while on holiday. 500ml bottle opened on 4th June 2016. Not really a sunny day brew, but I wanted to have it anyway! As the name suggests, it’s black (like a lump of coal), the head a beige blanket of foam. Sweeter than I expected, and not as rich in body depth either, but still a decent beer with slightly over roasted maltiness coming through in both the nose and taste. Glad I bought it.

Pours a thin watery brown. Looks like a brown ale. Not what I expected at all based on the name and the style. Nose is heavy belgian yeast esters. Taste follows. This presents as a belgian dubbel and not a great one. Very dissapointing.

Bottle; pours dark brown with a beige head; aroma of chocolate, nuts, caramel, and a hint of licorice; taste is slightly sweet with chocolate, vanilla, nuts, and a hint of roasted malt; finish is semi dry with a hint of bitterness; okay

Deep brown color with a soft, tan-ish colored head. Light off banana notes over roasty porter-like flavor. Bready aroma.

500 ml bottle. Pours ruby brown with a medium frothy light tan head that goes to a thin film and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet roasted oaty chocolate and caramel.

The flavor is sweet sugary dark fruits, roasted grainy chocolate malts with some black licorice and ashy bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and a bit watery.

Overall, it’s overly sweet, grainy and ashy.

Malt and cereal smell and taste along with some mineral. Doesn’t even remotely taste like a stout. Light body, medium carbonation, and slight foam.

Dark pour, thin head. Aroma is light of caramel and roasted malts. Flavor is also light, medium body. Mostly dark malts, some roastedness. A little alcohol at the finish, burnt.

Pours dark red/brown in color. Smells like cocoa and burnt toast. Has a flavor of cocoa, and some raisin and cherry. This has a nice creamy head and avg lacing. Pretty good beer, is really like a hybrid of a stout and an ipa.
