COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottled. 4.5% in UK & Europe. Exported to the US at 5.8%.
To get a subtle smokiness we brew with Scottish peated whisky malt, English pale and roasted malts and boil only whole leaf goldings hops. Querkus is then patiently cold matured over pieces of old French oak barrels. The flavours from the toasted wood slowly seep into the beer; bottling only when we think it is right.

Draught at the old Bishops Arms in Malmö. Poured a dark brown-red with a thick slightly off white head. Dry, fresh grainy nose with some sweet maltiness and quite a bit raw ground coffee. Smooth malty taste, coffee and roast/smoke, creamy mouthfeel. Heavy for the strength, bit dry and dusty. Not too quenching but a nice malty ale that I didn’t really pin down as smoked until I read this, more like a softer Schwarzbier turned ale.

Bottle @ YNWA, Kolding.
Pours clear dark chestnut with a small, frothy, off-white head. Aroma has clear smoke, some bacon, good chocolate. High carbonation, dry and easy mouthfeel. Flavour is light roasted, dark chocolate, quite a lot of smoke. Okay, even if it feels a bit unbalanced.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2010 Like the rater bellow i got this from beers of europe. Apparently this is an ’Oak smoked porter’. I still recall in 2003 when Alaskan Smoked Porter was easy to locate in the UK and suffice to say I was a fan. Aroma is smoky chocolate ,leading to some smoke fish ,Mackerel or something. Flavaz hit me as smoky woodiness ,then rich slimey chocolate ..something powdery about the chocolate vibez. . Pretty oily and chewey , roasty too. I reckon turn up the alcohol and make the smoke more prononuced at it would be real cool. I like Hepworth, they’re innovative and creative.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Dark coppery brown with a big tan head. Smoked malts aroma to the fullest. Caramel, smoked malts, hints of oaky woodiness towards the finish. Interesting, though a bit thin body.

BCA from Millets Farm, Frilford, Oxon, 31-05-10 consumed the same day Pours chestnut brown, clear and looking very nice, large light beige head atop. Some smokiness showing on the nose along with a light but discernible fruitiness. Taste is smoky but not too much, its soft in the mouth, bit roasty and with some dark slightly sour fruits showing. I often find Ridgeway can be a little hit and miss but I rather like this. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov13 3.4
