COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottled. 4.5% in UK & Europe. Exported to the US at 5.8%.
To get a subtle smokiness we brew with Scottish peated whisky malt, English pale and roasted malts and boil only whole leaf goldings hops. Querkus is then patiently cold matured over pieces of old French oak barrels. The flavours from the toasted wood slowly seep into the beer; bottling only when we think it is right.

500ml bottle from Era Wine Store. Thin bodied and brown in colour with a level layer of beige foam. Smokey goodness in the aroma but a bit thin in the mouth. There are some smokey chocolate flavours which are quite good.

Aroma of smoke, roasted malt, with notes of sweetness. Pours a dark brown with a rapidly dissipating khaki head and no lacing. The taste is peaty, roasty, and woody, with hints of fruit and vanilla. Medium-light body with medium carbonation. Overall, enjoyable smoked porter.

Dark brown and clear. Has an off-white head, mostly lasting. Malty aroma, smoke, malt and lactic acid. Flavor is sweet too, fizzy, lactic acid and...acid, faint smoke.

A reddish dark brown porter with a thick frothy brown head. In aroma, a smooth chocolate malt with licorice and grassy notes, nutty character, perfumey finish. In mouth, a sweet perfumey chocolate with light peaty notes, molasses, nice.

As stated previously, the smoke is the predominant feature of this beer. Not overpowering, but certainly at the forefront. I had this after an Arrogant Bastard, so I know it’s not fair to compare the two. It does have a lighter body than I would have guessed, a dark brown but not totally opaque look to it. But I love a good porter, and this is good. As I said... the smoke is the thing with this brew.

There wasn’t much of a release of carbonation when I opened this bottle. I poured it vigorously into my English Pint glass (hey, it’s not every day that I open a 500ml bottle) to produce a modest, cream/light brown colored head atop a mostly opaque, dark brown ale with orange and ruby hues. The aroma is very English, with sweet, roasted malts and light oak. It really smells great, almost of raisins and reminiscent of a smoked peat Scotch ale. It’s very, uh, oddly sweet up front in a very English way with a mostly light bodied mouth feel. Initially, the smoke is only noticeable in the finish, but as the beer warms the smoke really becomes strong up front as well. I don’t normally run into a smoked English ale, and this one is a real treat. at first I wasn’t so impressed, but this quickly grew on me. The smoke presence is very enjoyable, distinct, and is well balanced with the beer’s sweetness. Woody, meaty, roasted. and smoky, with just enough body to bold it all down, but not so much that its a tedious to drink. Not bad! It reminds me of a Rauchbier in intensity and body, but with the meatiness of an English ale.

Bottle 50 cl. Pours dark brown with small head and a nice smoked aroma in the scent. Taste has some roasted malts, dark roasted coffee, slight chocolate and a nice smoked sense in it. Still quit smooth and easy to drink.
