3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 TheRealMGD (541) - Lakewood, Washington, USA - JAN 19, 2012500ml bottle. Clear, deep red-brown pour with a brief, short beige head leaving no lace. Nose is some roasted malt with a light spiciness, chocolate and drak fruits. Medium body and fairly light carbonation. Medium-roast malt, chocolate, light spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) and dark fruit. Finish is medium and continues all the same aromas while being nicely balanced. I don’t understand all the low ratings (unless earlier versions were lousy) - this is a really good, sessionable holiday porter.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Dacrza (346) - Great Meadows, New Jersey, USA - MAY 4, 2013
date reviewed: 25 January 2013...
glassware: Victory Hopdevil nonick...
occasion: research paper grading, round one...
appearance: jet black body that intimidates as only Santa can; off-white rim more like a dirty Santa...
aroma: punchy peat malts--with some grassy, oaty--a bit of cornbread(?); this shouldn’t diminish the effect....
palate: smooth, weighty, active strength--drinkable but stern...
taste: a scotch-like experience, with a dialed-down peat and ping--delightfully agreeable...
overall: I recall this beer catching flak for its name and label; Santa’s nothing if not humorous, so the State needs to take some soma and drink this; juvenile packaging aside, the beer is a medium-strength winter warmer that has me in a giving mood long after the holiday season...
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 zoucrew102 (174) - - APR 13, 2013
Aroma is strong coffee and chocolate notes. Pours a dark brown, but still able to see through it unlike most porters. Taste is strong chocolate with coffee notes. Finishes very smooth with hints of chocolate that linger.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 J_man (553) - Tustin, California, USA - MAR 25, 2013
Charred/roasted aromas from a crystal clear dark amber/rootbeer colored body with a light tan head. I admire this for being a true English porter which is not heavy or creamy, but rather a fairly light bodied ale with roasted components. However, there’s not a lot going on here other than the charred taste and a bit of bittersweet chocolate. It definitely improves as it warms up (and I’m talking above cellar temperature) and develops more character like a light molasses flavor and even a bit of dark fruit. Finishes dry and a little bitter with lasting bittersweet chocolate flavor.

When all of the Christmas beers dropped in price, I grabbed some. This brewing company has never impressed me, but how can I pass up a beer called Santa’s Butt? This beer is dark, has a nice malty aroma, and a malt forward flavor. The finish is smooth, subtle bubbles, and a nice copper finish. It’s not great, and I wouldn’t pay full price for this... but a $1.99 bottle of Santa’s Butt is worth every penny! No pun on the copper flavors.

Draft to taster. Looks solid; a semi-transparent brown with off-white lacing. Smells of dark malt. Tastes like it smells, only better, with some cocoa flavor too. Good on the palate with a smooth finish. Better than it’s ratings suggest IMO (at least on draft).

500ml bottle from Terre de Boissons Calais. Very dark brown with very thin beige head. Its an ok beer, with some malt. Not very exciting. Some milk choc. Some malt. That’s about it.

Pours light brown with a white foamy head. Mild nose of some coffee. Aroma of some toffee, caramel, very bland.

Bottle. Nice dark pour with a frothy head. Nice smooth full palate. Kind of some funkiness on the aroma and taste, but it isn’t bad. A bit of cocoa here.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 kjohns (131) - North Dakota, USA - JAN 11, 2013
Dark brown pour with moderate light tan head. Aroma is slightly sweet caramel and toffee with some roasted malt notes. Taste is definitely on the sweet side, very little of the roasted malt flavors come through. Seems a bit "thin" overall. Reminds me more of a minimally hopped amber or brown ale than a porter. Nothing offensive about this brew, just not a great representation of the style.
