Commercial Description:
This special holiday porter is made for winter - rich and warming, the way they like it at the North Pole. It was inspired by this famous line from a well-loved children's storybook:

"And Santa sat on his great butt, enjoying a hardy brew..."

In case you find that amusing, the brewer hastens to point out that in England, "butt" refers to a certain sized barrel, in fact, holding 108 Imperial gallons. Back in the day it was quite a normal thing for a brewery to put its beer up in a large butt for storage. Still snickering, eh? Get your mind out of the gutter, or Santa will be skipping your house entirely this year.

Surface appearance is blackish in color but when a strong light is shined through it, it shines a beautiful crystaline ruby red. Carbonation was almost non-existant and as a result, there was no head or lacing to speak of. The aroma was of roast malts & toffee. The body was ’medium’ and the finish was slightly astringent. Not the worst porter I’ve ever had but not the best either.

Clear reddish brown with a very thin white head. Soapy chocolate aroma, taste is lightly nutty, malt and chocolate. A bit thin.

500 mL bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark reddish brown with a medium tan head. Poor head retention and lacing. Roasted malt aroma with some cherry-like fruity notes. Taste is roasted malts, cherries and toffee. Subtle hops in the finish. Medium bodied.

pours a black with a red tint when held up to the light, a small tan head, and some lacing. smell is of coffee, cocoa, a touch of malt, and some roasted nuts. taste is a little creamy, milk chocolate, coffee, and some malt, ends with just a touch of bitterness.

50 cl bottle which was a gift from a co-worker. I hope the folks at Rideway pay their graphics artist well, because he/she is the only person there that is earning his/her money. This is yet another thoroughly mediocre beer from this brewer. And this beer really does not even meet that level of excellence. Pours a dark brown with clear ruby glints when held against a light with lots of fat carbonation bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass. The head is off-white and fizzing with effervescence. This looks more like a glass of cola than a beer. The head disappears before the first sip. Faint aroma of malt and molasses. The flavor is weak roasted malt and cardboard. Very watery, thin body. In a word, this beer sucks. Drain pour.

This is a very plain beer. It tastes sugary and does not have a lot of body. Tastes very English, but I would like a little more flavor to go with it, especially hop flavor.
