"Is it just my imagination," queried old Santa, surveying the scene, "or is my Elf only getting worse and worse every year? What’s next? Seriously Bad Elf, I’ll wager. Mark my words."

This Very Bad Elf is one fine ale - rich, hardy, and flavorful, brewed to an original 1795 Thames Valley recipe, with a very special pale amber malt that is rarely used nowadays, and balanced by a modest addition of English Fuggle aroma hops. ’Ere’s to your elf!

"Bread/grain and a spicy hop note dominate the aroma and flavor of this one. Nice body to it, but a little harsh in the finish. Ridgeway’s beers don;t seem to be as cool as their labels, unfortuantely."

Bottle. Orange amber with just off white head. Malt and a but musty some corn in the nose. Flavor is murky aged caramel and tainted. Bad elf... Bad brew.

500ml bottle. Pours a medium gold, with a white head. Spicy, caramelly aroma, hops, toffee, fried fruit, lightly yeasty, grass, citrus. Off-dry, medium body and bitterness, creamy CO2. Malty, caramelly taste, hops, herbs, toffee, vanilla (!), apricot, earth. Quite rich and rustique, enjoyable. (2014-01-24)

Bottle. Hay, toffee malt and tangy orange/alcohol aroma. Golden yellow with moderate head. Sweet lemon, toffee malt and moderately bitter herbal grass. Mild alcohol finish. Tasty.

500ml bottle poured into a shaker glass; served cold. Aroma: Mild; not a lot comes out. Mild malt and hay/grass. Appearance: Crystal clear, dark gold body. No head. Thin lacing. Taste: Pale hops. Grass, pine, and light malt. Palate: Medium bodied, with a moderate amount of prickly carbonation. Moderate length on the finish, ends on bitter hops. Overall: A nice ale, but it tastes somewhat generic. Decent enough. I wouldn’t mind finding a bottle on Christmas morning, but I wouldn’t seek it out.

Sampled at esbls. Clear golden. My glass might need rinsed. A dry powdery feel. Malty with gentle fruit. Some heat. Ok.

Smells like a skunky English bitter. Tastes like a standard English bitter. Maybe bidding tons without the creamy body. Not impressed

Bottle at home, catch up rate thanks to my inlaws, 01/01/14. Golden amber with a good sized off white head that retains well. Nose is candied sugars, light spice, grassy, trace of diacetyl, bitter citric fruits, bread dough, light booze. Taste comprises caramel, candied sugars, light boozey tones, earthy orchard fruit tones, bready malts, light spice.. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying closure with light bitterness and little booze in the closure. Ok English strong, lacks any real complexity or depth, the booze is a little harsh in places and a definate diacetyl waft on the nose. That said it was drinkable.

50 cl bottle @ home. Pours clear amber with a white head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are malt, caramel, spices, and honey - with a slightly bitter finish.
