3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle, 4.7% as Riedenburger Ur-Helles. Spicy hop aroma. Hazy very pale yellow colour. Small stable white head. The flavour has a distinctly floral aroma hop with a heavy dose of paper thrown in. Low bitterness. After a while one gets used to the paper and it turns in to a more than decent Zwickel thing. Has some fruit, apple going on when chugged. Slightly citric, a bit like apple juice.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
500ml bottle as “Riedenburger ur-Helles” bought at Biorganic’s booth at HKCEC in Wan Chai during HKTDC Food Expo 2014.
Translucent, slightly dull golden honey colour; One finger head and white foam which fades in 40 seconds; Small sticky lacing and fizzy carbonation; Sweet aroma of full malt, with molasses, faint honey, strong bread, dough, light yeast and faint lemon; Close to light sweet taste of light lager malt, with light molasses, white bread, light dough, yeast, very light lemon, thin bitter hops and light strawy grass; Light body, thin palate; Mouth feel is thin body lager base, driven by light molasses, fair white bread and dough. Very low hops. No off-tastes. A bit dull but okay…
Hoppiness is faint lemon in nose, light lemon and straw taste. Bitterness is very low-fi for a very abrupt, malty-thin bitter non-finish; Quite dry after taste; Very easy to mouth.
Comments: Typical Riedenburger’s dull colour sets the tone for this light Helles: thin but malty body, moderate molasses and doughty bread, negligible hops. All these make for easy, undemanding drinking. Pretty faultless but dull and unmemorable.
