Porter Brewed with Real Pig Parts. Who would have thought that what started as an inside joke amongst the Right Brain brew team would evolve into out most acclaimed beer ever? Brewed with REAL Mangalitsa pig heads and bones, this rich and chocolaty porter is infused with a symphony of salty, smoky, and savory flavors. Some have hailed it as the ’quintessential bacon beer’ while others call it a true breakfast brew. Regardless of what you call it, this imaginative and complex beer has to be tried to be understood.

On tap at shakesperes, Kalamazoo MI. Dark black pour with a thin layer of light brown head, served in a goblet. Lots of lacing. Little creamy, little smokey like a bonfire. Thick foamy mouth feel, very low carbonation. Well blended flavor, chocolate and a hint of smokey finish, a little dry. Last time I had this at right brain it was woodier/smokier, a lot more character. Hope to try it again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2015-07-04. Black body with a small tan head. 3+ Aroma of roasty malt. Flavour is dry and roasty up front, sweet dark malt core. Light bitterness lingers. Average plus bodied palate, good carbonation. Pretty decent, a touch heavy on the roast for my own tastes but a well made porter. Pig parts? Not really but a solid stout. On tap at HopCat, Detroit.

Aroma is roasted malt, bacon, ham. Appearance is dark brown, light brown head. Taste is smoky, roasted malt and ham. Mouthfeel is decent, carbonation is lacking but has a good aftertaste. Overall, decent but nothing I’d go out of my way to get.

Um. Interesting. Oily head, which explains why there is no head. Smokey bacon flavor.

Sample at World Expo of Beer. Smokey taste that stays for quite awhile. Beautiful dark brown. Palate is long and lingering. Just a great beer.

Smells of smoke and chocolate. The pour is black oil. No real head, but a tan lacing that lingers. It does taste like chocolate and bacon (but I think the bacon taste is really do mainly to the smoke). Not usually a fan of smoke beers, but this one is pretty tasty. Has a bit of a saltiness to it. Oily, smoky mouthfeel. Unsure if I will get it again as $17 a bottle is pretty steep. It is a novelty beer, but actually is superior in taste than most of these novelty beers.

Tap: Deep brown, nearly black body with a rich tan head, slightly creamy. Aroma of liquid smoke, mild bacon, salt, roasted malt, & a bit of char. Flavor isn’t as meaty, but still has a mild campfire smoke essence. Little bit of bitter chocolate & licorice in the finish, too, finishing with a hint of ashy roast. Medium bodied. Not bad.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense dark brown head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, wood smoke, light salt, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and smoky/salty pig part notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, caramel, molasses, toffee, dark bread, wood smoke, light char, light salt, and roast/smokey earthiness. Good amount of roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, caramel, toffee, dark bread, wood smoke, light char, and roast/smoky earthiness on the finish for a while. Outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and smokey/salty pig part flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome smoked porter style. All around great robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roasted malt and smokey/salty pig part flavors; and very smooth to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, light smoked meats, lighter roasted malt, and a hint of coffee. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a one finger tan head that fades to a thin film outlined by a thicker ring. There is some sporadic webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate sweet chocolate with some hints of dark chocolate. There is some light roasted malt in the middle. The finish has light smoked meat with some light saltiness. The smoked meat flavors are lighter than I was expecting, but the salitness that comes in at the last second does give it a touch of bacon flavor. The smoked meat flavors intensified in my second glass from the bottle and improved the flavor. It’s medium-full bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, it’s a tasty Porter with some light smoky bacon notes. It’s a little pricey for what it is, but I don’t factor that into my rating.
