Bottle: Filtered.
Previously available bottle conditioned. Ceased being bottle conditioned after Marston took over in 2007.
Ingredients: Marris Otter malt; Challenger, Goldings,Fuggles and Progress hops.
The name refers both to the abv, and, by reference to the Californian goldrush of 1849, to the golden colour.

500ml bottle. Pours gold with a thin, quickly disappearing head. A dry spicy aroma, with the flavour mostly bitter and a bit muddy. This is one of the most disappointing bottled ales, especially considering the exceptional quality of the cask version.

From bottle, pours copper gold in colour with minimal head which doesnít last. Aroma of fruit cake, slight lemon zest, grass and a bit of a metalic caramel whiff. Taste is quite lightly sweet and soapy bitter. Noticable artificial carbonation and quite watery. Overall very average supermarket bitter.
