Cask at Wetherspoons Portsmouth. Pours dark amber with a good creamy beigish head leaving lace. Aroma is fruity malty caramel a bit hoppy. Flavor is acidy fruity malty a bit caramel bitter tea apples and grass. Finishes bitter dryish.

Thick mouthfeel; sweet malt and chewy baked fruits to taste; a sugary sweet aftertaste; a bit sickly on its own, would probably be transformed alongside a sticky toffee pudding or suchlike.

Cask at the Prince of Wales, Twickenham. Deep red-brown with a tight clingy off-white head. Malt plus a little marmalade and red fruit on the nose. Full bodied with slightly tart malt, touches of chocolate and smoke, plus a hint of oak and whisky in the finish.

On cask at the Alexander Graham Bell for the Wetherspoons beer festival. Pours a dark golden colour with a thick white head. Aroma of apple seed, yeast, caramel and alcohol. Similar flavours with lingering caramel and a dry finish. Moderate carbonation and a chewy mouth-feel. Nice.

First tasted this in the Olde George Inn, Christchurch in August 1983. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear dark mahogany in colour with a thick creamy white head. Black pepper notes in the spicy aroma. Rich creamy texture to the smooth malty mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts give a robust, moist maltloaf base with sweet molasses and dates. Strong hop prickle present in the spicy, peppery aftertaste. Finish is powerful with full bodied malt to the fore, giving lashings of vinous plum fruit and dry oak tannins full in the mouth. A superb ESB but does have a clout if you overindulge. Highly recommended.

Cask @ The Henglers Circus JDW. Medium reddish brown colour with a good head. Sour grassy vegetable aroma. Dry grainy biscuit marzipan flavour. Quite smooth & strong. Not my thing.

Copper-orange colour, medium foamy off-white head. Nose is malty, caramel. Flavour is malty, caramel, toffee, bit hoppy. Fairly bitter and slightly sweet toffee candy finish.

Cask at the Knights Templar in London. Malty, caramel nose, slightly roasted. Nice caramel malt flavor, good bitter finish. Tasty, rich and nice. Very enjoyable.
