Imperial IPA, Double IPA, XIPA, IIPA. Whatever you want to call it. Calcutta Cutter is our homage to hops. Lots of hops. Early hops. Late hops. Very late hops. Dry hops. Then we condition the bottles in a bed of hops. Well, maybe not that last bit, but you get the idea. We let the lupulin shine !

My Bottom Line:
Caramel and hop resins mesh in this portly and sweet example of the style.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the hazy pale amber.
-Coniferous bitterness isn’t too prominent, surprisingly.
-Mouthfeel is soft and cuddly.
-This goes against the trend style-wise, so kudos to them for thinking outside the box.
-This was too sweet for my personal preference in Double IPAs.

On tap at Vermont Tap House.

(Rating #6158)

Bottle. Pours a clear orange gold with small frothy white head that lasts. The aroma is fruity hop, pine, hemp. Medium mouthfeel with nice resin and light bitter finish. Good.

Pours hazy copper into a tulip. White head with little retention recedes to hug rim. Resin and mango aromas. Sweet molasses and oak front to back turning slightly sour in the lasting malt finish.

bomber, this one is a piney resin dank bomb. Not too many of these anymore, I really like em. Good malt body so that its not too "west coasty"

Draft@ The Grill next Door for $7.00. As the bartender set down the tulip I could smell floral hops and pine before I raised the glass to my face. Some candy sugar there as well. The flavor is dead on the aroma with a pronouced pine needle in the finish. Bready malt shows hints of toffee to help balance the hops. Bitterness is not over whelming, subtle pine. Really easy drinking for an ABV over 8.5. Damn, this is highly drinkable! Well crafted imperial that is real desriable on draft.

Draught at Lulu’s, 3/28/15
Nearly as red as the label, and a bit deeper with garnet and magenta hues and a small, beige head that shows moderate retention. Clarity is high, with just a touch of haze to it.
Very fruity in the nose; not just citrus but cherries, berries and apples even. Quite complex and though there is some thought of pine, it’s much more citrus-influenced than it is heavily acidic and resinous. Crystal malts, to my dismay, are here adding that "hard" iced tea-like note, with vanilla and light caramel sweetness certainly balancing things. Floral, green and even mint-like aromas emerge with warming. Lots of hop complexity, which is appreciated with little/no alcohol or flaws in the nose.
Both sweet and only moderately bitter in flavor, it almost comes off as more of a Double Pale ale. Crystal malts add that hard candy-like texture, though caramel sugars help soften things and a low but mostly tight carbonation concentrates the wonderfully fruity hoppiness. Toasted malt, strawberry and grapefruit all swirl about on the end, easing some of the sweetness, but it’s still probably a bit too malt forward. I do like the lack of resin here, but the malt bill needs a bit of work and it could use a bit more good old bitterness.

Surprisingly great DIPA on tap in Bar Harbor. Tons of juicy citrus on the nose. The taste is nicely sweet and tropical with grapefruit and grass without being abrasively bitter. Great beer.

Rcvd in trade. The appearance has a somewhat of a hazy dark brown colored body with a one fingered white foamy head that leaves some adequate clingy lacing that seems to be going all over the place. The smell has resinous hops with a nice citrusy aspect to it and also some nice spicy connotations to it as well. The taste has a bittersweet hoppy to sweet flavoring and combined all of the way through in the flavoring to leave a decent resinous aftertaste with a slight dry spicy finish. The palate sits about a medium on the body, not as sessionable as I had hoped for but did notice the 8.7% on the bottle so I guess I should have noticed that. Carbonation is good for the DIPA style and good for me. Overall, I would definitely take this one again if ever offered or have the opportunity to spend some more time back in Maine. To anyone visiting Maine, please don’t forget about Rising Tide often under-shadowed by Maine Beer Company.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2014 Pours a rich golden color with three plus fingers of thick creamy foam. The nose has some nice candied orange, sweet fresh hay, touch of pine and herbs. Flavors follow the nose with great juicy citrus, round caramel sweetness and great balance and a smooth bitter finish... touch under carbonated creating a bit more mouth coat on the finish but really a pleasure to drink !
