Tough to pin this one down; it strikes me differently every time. Sweetish nose of nutty grain, light caramel, orange zest. Lightly hazed orange-amber color. Tall sturdy foam. Mildly sweet, firmly bitter, tangy minerals. Bittersweet, lingering light resin. Plenty of character and easy to drink.

It’s a lager. It’s dark orange with barely any head. There’s bread and maltyness on the nose and bread and maltyness on the palate. It’s simplistic and drinkable.

50cl fliptop, Edeka Mohr, Bonn 02/2014, GC Tour de Rheinländle. Did not see how this poured, as it was consumed blind while on the road, but the beauitully simple and informative label wets the appetite enough. Rich and full-bodied for a Zwickl, with the gorgeous, characteristic Franconian spicy bread crust malts and assertive peppery hops. Unusual is the rich fruity, mousse layer of aged and old, even roasted fruits (banana, pear) and nuts (peanuts) even giving way to a distinct milk chocolate, all the while not cloying the palate, remaining immensely drinkable. A great surprise and surely one to revisit when in the area.

Trübes bräunliches Zwickel mit geringem Schaum. Geruch hopfig grasig, Geschmack angenehm herb, minimal säuerlich, süffig.

Quite tasty for a lager type beer. It has notes of grain, malt and hops. And the bottle looks very cool.

Erzengel (6224) - Wuppertal, GERMANY - DEC 7, 2013

Bottle, clear deep amber-brown with a fast-settling head, malty and slightly sweet nose with a touch of something appley, initially dry and malty in the mouth, then turning sweeter with notes of caramel and nuts. A little dark fruit and hoppy bitterness coming through in the finish. Nice example of a Frankish Braunbier.

Draft at Fränkisches Bierfest Nürnberg.
Hazy rich orange-brown body. Cascading slow-crawling head. Patchy and foamy white head.
Diacetyl, orange jelly, peanut butter notes, some yeast.
Brown sugar, browned bananas and apples.
Unpleasant to smell and taste.
. Medium-full body; rich carbonation; moderate bitterness.
Something like a classic kellerbier with problems: sweet, raw, diacetyl-laden.
Good body, fruity hop character, but sourish malt and diacetyl kill it.
Turns more towards tangy orange jelly / spoiled fruit as it warms.
