Bottle at the Gasthaus. Head is mostly lasting. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted bread/grain), with notes of smoked meat and campfire. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. A nice, easy-going, light-bodied smoky brew...not terribly satisfying to drink due to the light-and-watery body, but decently balanced and clean. Very strange that a brewery in the Franconian countryside makes two smoked beers...but cool to get stuff like this outside Bamberg.

Hartes Zeug eben.

Bottle consumed in Dec. 2012, best before Feb 2013: Rusty gold. Tight and creamy white head. Pleasant nose of browned breadcrust, toasted brown sugar, smoked hay dust, candied pecan, tobacco, and licorice hops. Hint of melanoidins and jammy blackberry esters. Soft and snug carbonation. Tad thin body. Beefy smoke and rich melanoidins caress the tongue right out of the gate. Fairly dry and cleanly attenuated, with a continuation of rich malt. Quenching hop acids merge with a well defined wood-root-spice hop kiss. Underlying vanilla cookie and marzipan flavors sweeten the lean center and lend some bounce as well. Flash of dark fruit slickness is coarsened by light minerals and bittersweet chocolate. Semi-chewy finish is packed with toasted bread and luscious melanoidins. A solid rauchbier...flavorwise, it’s maybe a bit quiet, and the body is on the thin side, but it’s certainly nice and clean.

50cl swing top bottle where the label seems to challenge you to find the name of the beer and the name of the brewer. It pours up with a clear amber body that supports an off white head of foam that leaves behind spotty lacing. The modest aroma offers up malts, some caramel malts and then a light hit of molasses sweetened soft smokiness. The taste begins with a nice bite of malty sweet smokiness that is light on the bacon but offers enough smoke to cover the flavor from front to back. To midway it picks up caramel and molasses and then a slight drying malt sweetened light roasted maltiness. It ends pretty even with a bit of dryness and a modest after taste sensation. Nice smooth approachable Smoked beer. Could be smokier for my taste but good nonetheless.

Pours out of the bottle in a deep dark brown colour with low steady head and medium body. Aroma of smoked meat and campfire. Taste of campfire, smoked meat and smoked ham. Hints of malt and barley. Finishes off like a big smoked ham. Not my kind of beer but still not as bad as others.

500ml Flasche.

---Rated BY Italianbeer85

Ruby, ember, red-brown color with a huge white head. Tastes of pine, smoke, salt and hints of malt. The first thing I managed to recognize is the unusual low carbonation, making this kind of boring, because of the lack of a medium-body to compensate this. Smoke gets mingeled up with salt and malt, with no real aftertaste. Malt is much stronger in this than the smoke is. Minor hints of spices add up with the malty smokiness. Not very impressive overall, taste does not convince by itself, by being too well-behaved, with nearly no aftertaste at all, which reminds me of a common commercial beer.

Pours a clear dark amber color with a tan head. The smell is roasted malt, smoke, bacon with some malt sweetness balancing. The taste is a nice blend of the smoke, roast and malt sweetness ending quite dry. Active carbonation with fine structure and light+ body. A nice approachable rauchbier.

Mal schauen, was mich hier erwartet!
Test vom 24.1.2009, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 12,11,12,8,12,10 - 10,45
