It won the Gold Star of the European Beer Star in 2008 and 2009, silver in 2010 and bronze in 2011 (are they slacking?) I’m usually not a Rauchbier fan, in fact, when I was in Bamberg, the only one I could drink more than one glass of was Spezial. I don’t remember why I ordered it online except maybe because I had to try the beer that won gold stars. The initial aroma was smokey but also a hint of detergent, don’t know why, but it’s there. It’s orangish-amber, 4.9%. Mmmm. Maybe I’m not so crazy about this one either after a few sips: quite smokey, breaded, Melanoiden malts present and some hop bitterness I can detect, but only in the back of the tongue. The more I drink, the smokier it becomes, and the more I like it. It’s still got a good backbone of malts up front and a little sweetness in the very front of the tongue, so overall, quite more complex as it warms up. :) In fact, as my tongue becomes more accustomed, or numb, to the smokiness, I taste more malts. It makes me wonder if Rauchbiers are like the Thai curry of beer: you need to numb your tongue from the chilis before you can really taste the underlying curry complexities? I’m a fan of Thai curry, but still not a Rauchbier fan.

# 3201 ersma: gabs auf der biermeile 2012 in berlin vom fass. kupferfarben mit dezenter, aber solider verschäumung. der geruch ist süß und leicht rauchig. der antrunk bringt schinken, rauch und holzscheit mit, aber in erträglich-angenehmen maßen. die mitte wird herber, die rauchigkeit dominiert das geschehen bis in den abgang. der ist nur mehr leicht rauchig-schinkig, süßliche röstmalzaromen runden das ganze ab. fazit: erst recht rauchig, das lässt in der intensivität aber zügig nach, dann ergibt sich ein rundes geschmacksbild. 10,9,10,9,-,9 - 9,26 - 26/2/13

Nice looking toffee colored pour with a small khaki head. Minimal lacing. Huge smoked ham aroma with malt. Like a bacon bread. Taste is nice and oily ham. Biscuit after the smoke seems to mellow. Awesome. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottled (4.9% ABV). Clear copper colour, medium sized off-white head. Smell of smoked malt. Mild smoky aroma escorted by toffee, dough and hints of grassy hops. Sweetbitter finish with citrusses and toasted malt. Enjoyable brew.

Rézvörös színe van, habja sárgás, közepes méretű és elég jól bírja magát. Illata nagyon füstös, fás, sonkás, húsos, kissé élesztős és tönkölykenyeres. Ízében is ott a füst és a húsos érzés, de már visszafogottabban, sok maláta, egy kis karamell, édeskésebb zamatok, picit odakapott pirítóssal, csipet komlóval és egy kis keményfával. Könnyű teste van és közepesen élénk. Utóíze füstös, keserédes és kissé száraz. Na, ez nagyon jól sikerült, igen kiegyensúlyozott, kellemes és különleges szomjoltó.

Flip-top. Pours clear amber in color with thick off-white head. Smoked ham, smoky wooden notes too. Nice. Flavor has same smokey notes but more woody smoke and not so much of smoked ham. A bit sweet even in taste. Pleasant smokey aftertaste.

Aroma affumicato ma molto meno intenso di quelle della Schlenkerla. Resta comunque un aroma dominato da sentori fumosi e maltati con una leggera componente di luppoli nobili. Al palato si riconoscono le note e i sentori riscontrati nell’aroma. Una buona birra non c’è che dire.

#209 Ein altbierfarbenes Rauchbier mit tollen Schinken-Rauch-Aromen. Der Antrunk ist eher leicht und rauchig-malzig. Der Geschmack ist würzig, eher leicht rauchig und verhalten süßmalzig. Im Abgang kommt der Rauch etwas zu kurz und Hopfen fehlt auch etwas. Nichtsdestotrotz ein absolut gelungenes Rauchbier! Test vom 1.3.2010, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 12,13,12,11,10,12 - 11,90
