Bottle, RBESG 2012 grand tasting. Amber to brown clear colour. Aroma very strong peat, you can almost feel the taste in your nose. Smoke, wood. Taste strong peat all the way, medium bitter. Very smooth, extremely drinkable, not harsh at all. One of my highlights of the evening.

RBESG. Dark amber-red body. Lovely smoked cheese nose, some peatiness. Sweet nose, nice maltiness, big peatiness and general smokiness for the relatively light body. Bacon, balanced. Nice. Heck, WOW!

500 ml bottle. From bierzwerg.de.
Clear deep mahogany colour with small to average size off-white head. Peat, smoke, whisky sweetness and malt in aroma. Flavour is peat, moderate smokiness, smoked ham and malt. Quite nice actually. More peat than smoke in flavour.

TAR (2518) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - MAR 31, 2012
Bottle at Hütt’n in Nov. 2011, and bottle at home; best by 5/24/2012: Rusty chestnut. Everlasting creamy ivory foam adorns the glass. Potent iodine aromas intertwined with breadcrust, fresh leather, cookie, tar, and an invigorating whiff of minerals. Beautifully fluffy weightlessness to the carbonation. Initially airy, dryly malty and clean as a whistle, with a buoyant core of minerals tempered by potent iodine. Nary a trace of residual sweetness, or weight for that matter, aside from a flash of apricot jam and dabs of heavily creamed hazelnut coffee and unsweetened chocolate. Iodine character is much more bright than medicinal, and more akin to hospital scents (medical tape, squooshy bed, etc.) than anything else. Even a bit of road tar shyly exudes, adding some eccentricity to the mix. Exemplary dryness cleanses the palate, beckoning yet another sip, as the minerals offer light grip and contrast to the snappy maltiness. Whiskey malt prevails over the judiciously incorporated and sparingly dextrinous Munich with a fruity slickness. Closes with a toasted biscuit Munich punctuation graced with an assertive iodine vibrancy. Now this is fun! Fine specimens like this one are precisely why I love German beer. The technical knowledge coupled with the lengths taken to address even the most minor of details, is paralleled by few. The brewers here have coaxed virtually every nuance from the malt, resulting in something that is thoroughly fulfilling yet amazingly dry and balanced. With the usage of whiskey malt, not only is this interesting and unique (especially in notoriously traditional Bavaria where conservatism in brewing runs deep), but ultimately this is much more than an experiment. It’s quite delectable and a very cool deviation on a tradition style.

Bottle (not that cork though in the picture though). Aroma smoke, malts. Slightly thin palate and leaves an aromatized lager feel. Needs more body to be really premium. But Not Bad.

Sorry for the german rating, but this is a lousy rating from my "newbie" time (2007-2009), and it’s not worth of being translated. I just added it for the statistics, and to complete my backlog!

Borresteijn (5205) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - FEB 10, 2012
50cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Clear amber brown colour, off white head. Aroma of full on peated malts, iodine, earth, light caramel. Flavour is peat, iodine, fizzy CO2/minerals, very watery actually, light malty, smokey finish. Watery, thin, lightbodied, fizzy. Aroma promises way more than the beer can deliver, this was quite a let-down.

brugmanneke (282) - GERMANY - JAN 25, 2012
(50 cl bottle) Clear reddish-amber color, beige foamy head. Taste is medium bitter. Aroma of peated malt, obviously. Reminds me strongly of my old box of watercolors. Ink smells like that too. Burnt flavor, slightly metallic. Anyway, this is quite different from the usual Franconian smoked beers. I am not a fan of scotch whisky, so I do not instantaneously enjoy Smokey George that much. But: It is still the most convincing and uncompromising whisky-malt beer I have tried so far. I appreciate that very much, kudos to Rittmayer!
