Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of Pinball. Pours a nutty amber with a slight haze and an off-white head. Heavy, heavy smoke aroma, band aids, salami and iodine - damm I hate that. Medium body, low carbonation, sweet burned caramel, heavy ashes, iodine and burned plastic. Subdued bitterness. 141111

Swing-top, mindestens haltbar bis 03.02.12. Nose is lightly burnt, very peaty smoke, gotten away from traditional Franconian wood-fired/meaty smoke and into the Scottish predilection. There’s some caramel malt underneath. Pours A clear, still amber with a fizzy and loud tan head. Light-bodied but not watery, drenched in smoke not with a burst of initial intensity, but in a way that rumbles along the course of the tongue and into the throat for the duration and into a smooth, dry aftertaste. Lightly sweet with little carbonation, a little closer to rubbery than to oily. Mouthfeel is fascinating, peat and campfire ash rubbed slowly across the tongue. A bit of gritty caramel/toffee underneath, and under that a layer of fine medicinal/plastic, but not really off-putting. Tar and iodine and red berries. Very unusual for Germany, even Franconia, and finally, a beer worthy of discussion!

UPDATED: FEB 20, 2012 (bottle) pours a clear copper-ruby colour with a frothy off-white head. quite one-dimensional, but awesome aroma of ash, campfire smoke, peat smoke, burnt rubber, slightly medicinal, with a faint hint of caramel. flavour is mostly the same, lots of ash and phenolic smoke, with a faint hint of caramel, herbal hops and a slightly minerally finish. slightly watery body with average carbonation. not overly complex, but very nice. a testimony to the fact that peat-smoked malt does work, if used properly.

Big smoky aroma, but not particularly meaty to me. More of a burnt wood and singed raisin aroma. Head died too quickly (from bottle). Nice amber color. I couldn’t decide on the palate on this one; seemed alternatively chewy and thin. My craziness. The flavor was heavily smoked, with slight bitterness, slight sweetness, and some fruit (raisin). Good, but not great.

Angenehm süßlich-rauchiger Antrunk, später milder werdend. Wenig herb, unspektakulär, mit der Zeit langweilig. Die Rauchigkeit kann dies nicht verhindern, da sie deutlich abflacht. /8/8/7//8

UPDATED: MAR 30, 2011 Bottle… February in Franconia (2011)… Sparkling, clear amber lager without much of a head to it. Peat smoke and applewood bacon are the olfactory components that rule supreme – lovely, extreme. Light to medium-bodied with a buttery mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. The flavor is sweet and smoky – toffee, honey, bacon and scorched peat. Smoky, moderately sweet finish. Big-time thanks to erlangernick and Koelschtrinker for making this month of Franconia lagers possible!

Thanks Hopscotch! Really quite smokey in the nose, a slight peaty quality comes through but also the typical bacon goodness that I love in these beers. Very warming without even taking a sip. Body is a bit on the light side for the style, which isn’t excellent for individual sips but makes the act of drinking a glass more reasonable. Smokiness dominates the beer, not a lot of other malt character, but still a pretty good Rauch (if not very complex).
