2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 tripelthreat (131) - Soquel, California, USA - AUG 13, 2009
Bottle purchased at the brewery. Cloudy brownish-orange body with very fine-bubbled head. Nose is bready, a little toasted. Flavor is fairly weak, faintly spicy, a touch of hops, kind of sweet but none it is strong enough to really enjoy. Soft mouthfeel. Decent and drinkable but not all that noteworthy.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 otakuden (1490) - Vero Beach, USA - AUG 4, 2009
Clear and golden hues of hay and straw, my River Horse lager poured with bubbling excitement and a soft white head which is quite content to laze around while I bask in her visage. Soft, puffy, and a wee bit stubborn, I swirl my glass to rile up her nose which wafts to me upon a breeze of sweet lemon orchards and blossoms, fields of hay and grain damp with dew and ready for harvesting, sweet corn, and a brisk zip of citric acidity in the flourish. A bright and sunshiny nose, indeed. I don’t know how fresh my bottle is, but so far her nose is ready to play. My first quaff is soft, and full with breezy bubbly carbonation. A creamy texture leads into soft grains, white bread, and faint esters of honey while her lemon zest tickles and teases the top of my tongue. She is full, lightly sweet but not too corny or cloying with a soft bed of hay and grain notes, essence of honey, and sparkling fresh lemons. Her finish is short and simple, a decent example of American craft lager potential.
I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I am always highly leery of any lager, craft, domestic, or import. But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a good lager when she comes around, and River Horse treated me wonderfully with their Lager. I still prefer a good pilsner over a lager any day, but that is just personal taste.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 williamherbert (1041) - Syracuse, New York, USA - AUG 3, 2009
Glowing sunny golden color. Tons of carbonation. Thin layer of Italian ice head. Clear. The aroma is barley lager. Fresh crisp biscuity lager malt. Just a touch of sour apple. Devoid of adjuncts. The taste is a solid lager taste with a crisp, slightly citrusy taste (but not from the hops, it seems). The malt is slightly bready. Sour apple, hint of butterscotch. Pleasant for a summer lager. Tangy bubblegum at the end. Thin and watery feel. Not unpleasant but not much there. It’s a not-bad lager. Very run of the mill but drinkable.

Solid is the word I begin and end with... interesting citric aroma--clove and softer hops present a welcoming fragrance... golden effervescent body in a pilsner glass, head is thick, creamy lingering with a finger of depth... full-bodied, easily drinkable, with slight carbonation engaging the throat... banana notes lead the tastebuds of this generally roundedm malty lager...as a sampler filler, serviceable... as a stand-alone, not worthy mentioning in the same breath as any of the major lager players...not watered down, but not lively or intriguing enough to warrant another bottle unless circumstance forced it so... solid.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 lamas (1033) - Washington DC, USA - MAY 2, 2009
Bottle. Different label than that in the picture. Mine says 5% ABV. Pours a clear copper with a smallish off-white head. Crisp aroma with lots of caramel, some spiciness, and hints of wet wheat bread. Good body for the style. High level of carbonation. Sweet, grainy maltiness upfront. Finishes a tad dry with some acidic lemony qualities.
