Note: this beer is now an amber ale, and the ABV has gone up from 4.5 to 5.5%. Special Ale is our flagship ESB. Itís been with us from the start and hasnít changed since that first brew way back in 1996. Ample quantities of caramel malt give this English ale a soft copper hue and the colorful addition of carapils malt adds a slight sweetness you might mistake for honey.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. The aroma is distinctly raisin cinnamon bread with a toffee undertone and peanut butter coming in late. Itís a murky, unfiltered raisin brown color with a khaki head that has okay retain and only a light lace. Itís a medium high sweet and light bitter blend. The texture is a a light syrup with a fuzzy carbonation and medium full body. Roasted flavors are picked up with tones of toffee, toasted bread, grains, and nuts. The finish is roasty and grainy with a driness and a light astringent quality. The aftertaste is grains, and lightly toffee.

Bottle at the in-laws provided by said in-laws. Boy, did earn these ticks the hard way. Out of the bottle because appearance did not matter. Nose was mostly malt, light grass. Taste has some sweetness, toast. Minimal bitterness. Light citrus and grass on the finish. Medium body.

Bottle from Half Time Beverage, New York. Pours a bright red amber colour with a light tan colour, very foamy, long lasting head. Aroma of caramel, malt, and mild spice. Light sweetness and bitterness. Body is medium, texture a little thin but ok. This is a decent amber ale.

This is what an amber should have. A little extra spice and malt. Slight bitter, But warming and smooth. Great color. Had on tap.

Dark amber body with thin creamy tan head. Mildly malty nose with hints of sweetness. Bold toffee and caramel flavors co-mingled with roasted malts. Hop flavor comes out to take the edge off of the heavy sweetness. A little dense, but decent selection for the colder months.
