Darker than a starless night deep in the rocky mountain wilderness, dryer than the barren tundra, this stout is to be feared and respected. Do so and you shall be rewarded.

22 oz bottle. Pours inky black with a medium creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass. The aroma is sweet grainy chocolate malts, dark fruit, and some bourbony alcohol. The flavor is sweet roasted chocolate malts, tart dark fruits, some black licorice and a roasted bitter finish with some bourbony alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with creamy carbonation. Overall, an excellent imperial stout. All the roast kind of clashed with the sweet, slightly tart, fruit.

black with tan head, dense down to ring. Rich, dense dessert nose, fudgey dark chocolate alongside plum sweetness. Front palate has light booze and dark chocolate, expedition-esque roast and chocolate married bitterly mid-palate, full bodied and creamy accenting the roast, light anise esters adding depth. Very well rounded and balanced, very similar to expedition without the richness or depth.

Deep brown with a finger of mocha head. Caramel and chocolate aroma. Taste is more of the same with more cocoa plus a bit of smoke. Dry, slightly chalky finish.

Pours black with whisky mocha head. Aromas of toasted malts, anise, and molasses. Definitely some smoky flavors going on with this one. A touch of sour and sweet too. Nice mouth feel. Solid stout.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2014 Bottle undated. Dark brown near black with a lasting brown head. Dark chocolate and inky char in the nose, yeast gives it a faint milk powder chalkiness but it’s otherwise clean smelling. Pleasant aroma hops show up more with warmth, giving the nose a nice herb / pepper character. Medium body, moderately sweet approach, effervescence and acid cutting the sugar well. Frothy and rich carbonation, dark chocolate expression from the malt is surprisingly good; lasting cocoa bitterness in a savory, dry, salty finish worthy of gulps. Rock solid mouthfeel and flavor balance, if only the nose were more expressive.

A black body beneath a creamy, tight, two inch, frothy crowned head falling slowly to a solid sheet, thick ring, and thick arcing peninsulas of lace with leopard accents

Well attenuated and balanced aromas and flavors full of black coffee, restrained tingling citrus-pine hops and belgian esters, dark berry nuances with layers of lean caramel and smoke flowing through on a smooth, drying medium body offering residuals of smokey dark chocolate with vanilla, citrus rind, and grass, a light tact builds as the first serving finishes out

Solid complexity with just enough richness to offer depth and balance the dry, bitter qualities, keeping this one drinkable and interesting, well done

22oz bottle 2014 served at 55° into 13.25 oz Luigi Bormioli brandy snifter
