On draft at hops and pie in Denver CO. Pours black with a tan head. Oak aroma. Intense whiskey, oak and vanilla flavors.

Dark black with a thin khaki head. Aroma was super dark and sticky with heavy notes of brown sugar, roasted dark chocolate syrup, and a little molasses. Flavor was large and delicious and thick. Lots of dark chocolate cake tones, brown sugar sweetness, a warming boozy tone like rum or bourbon, a little tone of roasted coffee, black licorice/molasses, on a sticky sweet finish that was warm and enticing with a hint of vanilla.

Bomber poured a translucent dark reddish brown nearly black with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of bourbon, oak, vanilla, roasted malt, dark chocolate and dried fruit. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of bourbon, oak, bitter chocolate, roasted malt and light dried fruit with a smooth dry lingering bourbon finish.

Bottle. Pours clear black with a medium, frothy light tan head, short retention with light lacing. Aroma is lightly sour plums with whiskey and oak notes, dark malt and earthy hops. Flavor is malt forward with roast notes, oak, whiskey, light hops and bitterness with sour dark fruity esters and a dry finish. Full body and medium carbonation.

Bottle. Pours opaque black with thin, fizzy tan head; short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is roasted and caramel malts, chocolate, whiskey, coffee, earthy hops, and oak. Flavor is roast malt forward with chocolate, dark fruit esters, oak, and earthy hops; whiskey undertones throughout with a dry finish. Medium body and low carbonation.

Thanks Kylebob! Black pour with a small bubbly brown head. Aroma of bourbon, tannic wood, lighter roasted malts and chocolate. Lighter bodied with flavors of bourbon, light ash and chocolate. Not bad.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2012 Thanks to kylebob. Deep black pour khaki head. Aroma of roasted malt light coffee and wood pulp. Taste imperial stout and wood pulp. A bit lighter body than hoped but enjoyable.

UPDATED: FEB 26, 2013 Bottle 361 of 708 of Batch #1 (1/12). Dark brown black with fast fading coffee crema head and no lacing. Definitely thinner than it’s base beer. Typical Stranahan’s whiskey nose with coconut and vanilla sweetness over some dark roast malt. The barrel characteristics kind of own this beer loosing a lot of the nuances of the base leaving dark roast coffee malt flavors holding up the whiskey. Not too hot, but not very complex-there is a nice pronounced licorice streak and aftertaste but other than that not a lot to set it apart. Good, but not a standout.

Pour out of 22 oz bottle, bottle #72/708, batch 1/2012. Pour is thick black with tan/dark brown head, aroma brought notes of big roast, anise, hints of caramel, toffee, slight vanilla, touch of dark fruit. Taste is a mix of roast, coffee, chocolate, some anise, dark fruit, finishing fairly sweet, very roasted, with some vanilla, slight oak, very slight whiskey comes in. Tasty and balanced.
