COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark, mahogany coloured ale was a favourite with the workers in 19th century London.
Our Porter is well balanced between malt and hops with subtle notes of chocolate and coffee resulting in a smooth and very drinkable dark beer.
Eighty Eight Robust Porter is unfiltered and bottle conditioned for maximum taste and enjoyment.

Smooth, well-made robust porter ticks all the boxes. Would rate this higher if Ratebeer favoured a to-style approach, rather than its happily anarchic hedonistic scale. Standard appearance with a stunted head. Subdued aroma of milky coffee, Milo, bath grout, faint whiff of nail varnish/acetone but not enough to spoil the experience. Lovely rounded flavours of dark chocolate, toffee, licorice root and umami. Anything it loses in appearance with the underdone head it makes up with a silky, mildly-carbonated body. Really nice. (330ml bottle from Leura Cellars.)

Bottle from Beer Cartel. Darkest brown, slightly milky appearance, earthy/mushroomy aroma, roasty chocolate, coffee, quite dry, light body, thin texture, medium bitterness. Not Riverside’s best.

Bottle cheers to Owen. Very robust and chocolate driven. Cocoa like with heavy driven mocha undertones. very solid and quite quaffable stuff. Nice

330mL bottle. Pours jet black with a very small mocha head and a lightly charred toffee aroma. Flavour is dominated by treacle/charred toffee as well as a light espresso coffee. If you like a traditional porter this is for you although if you prefer something a little out of left field this might not be for you.

At cellar temperature and into a snifter. Light pffft as the cap releases followed by a burst of damp top soil, lightly roasted coffee beans and bitter dark chocolate. In the glass the nose also offers up a touch of marzipan, cola soda, charred red wood and peppery spice. Settles close to black with ruby shining through in the shallows. Sloppy, thick-set mess of foam atop is lasting and leaves a very fine lace. Much lighter in body than expected with light carbonation and an earthy and dry, smoky, burnt malt finish. Milk chocolate front with a malty, mocha mid-palate and peppery hop and bitter malt backend. Cigarette ash and a taste reminiscent of a bonfire as it fizzles out remains long after each sip. This one sits a little heavy in the stomach so a session ale it is not. A likeable brew though, but one was enough! (33cL, fresh batch, no date stamp, Cellarbrations Carlisle)

Bottle, thanks to MrKennedy. Black with a lasting beige head that laces well. Lightly roasted aroma with mocha, hazelnuts, light floral notes. Silky texture. Sweet mocha, slightly more roasted flavours than suggested by the aroma, bitterness kept creeping up at the end. The sweetness is a little suffocating of the other things going on, but a pretty fair drop.

Pours totally black with a light brown head. Aroma is malt, roastiness, coffee, chocolate and some vanilla. Taste is lights sweet leading to a roasty and bitter finish. Pretty good stuff.
