Transfer from BA review on 4-8-14- Poured from can into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown-mahogany color with a small bubbly head of a tan colored head. The head fades very fast leaving almost no lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is strongest of a caramel smell along with some aromas of brown bread, chocolate, and brown sugar. Along with these aromas are some lighter raisin smells as well as a bit of an aroma of toffee and some light hoppy smells of an earth and herbal nature. Taste – The taste begins of a sweeter brown bread, a lighter chocolate taste, and some caramel flavor. The caramel transitions more toward a toffee and molasses flavor as the taste advances. Some darker fruity flavors come to the tongue later on in the taste with cherry and raisin being the most prevalent of the fruit. While the fruity flavors come, the caramel and toffee flavors seem to dwindle more and more, with the overall sweetness of the brew remaining relatively constant, if not growing slightly less toward the end of the taste. With a bit of a herbal and earthy flavor coming to the tongue at the very end of the taste, one is left with a rather malty and moderately sweet flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – For a brew of only 5.1 % abv, this is one thick and chewy brew with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. Both are very nice for the style and flavors and make for a thick and chewy feel that is well beyond the expected. Overall – The mouthfeel of this brew in conjunction with its moderately sweet, but rather malty flavor really make this brew a nice drinker. A very interesting scotch ale that tastes much bigger then it should (at least in terms of its abv.). A rather nice brew overall.

Caramel with some roast noticeable on the nose. Appearance is a deep Amber with below average head retention. Flavor contains notes of caramel and roast as well with fruity esters. Mouthfeel is thin and has a grain astringency. Overall, I would not recommend this beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can - Pours a clear light brown. Notes of caramel and roasted malts. Not bad, but not my style.

12oz can from Kroger in Grandview. Deep brown pour. Aroma of cereal, toasty malts, nuts, caramel. Tastes are along those lines - malty, sweet bread. Not my bag.

can @ Vino Bellissimo / Lima OH --- Clear dark mahogany brown, 1" tan head, mottled bands of lace. Aroma of malt. Taste is dark caramel malt that stays on the semi-sweet side all the way through a medium finish. There is minimal bittering at the end. Overall, a solid ale, somewhat understated for a Scottish.

Can. Dark mahogany, very dark, a short white head. Very heavy earth and roast, smoke that’s not beechwood, taste medium-bitter with harsh grainy malt character, sort of overdecocted, light sweetness that permeates. Touch of citrus. Full body with more earth and Munich, did a good job (and the second can, days later, agreed with me much more).

Pours a deep amber that you can see through if you hold it up to the light. Not much in the way of aroma, but there are obviously some different malts going on. Starts out with a sweet caramel flavor with just a hint of smoke and wood at the finish. Almost no hop presence, as it should be. Good balance. Smooth, good flavor. Quite nice.

Can poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a dark ruby color with an off-white head of foam. Good retention. The aroma is mildly nutty and roasty with some caramel sweetness and doughy bread notes coming through. There’s a touch of smoke in there too. Taste is earthy sweet. Nicely balanced. Moderate carbonation. Decent beer.

On tap. Pours a dark brown almost purple color with a small white head. A nice light nose of chocolate and berries. The flavor is pretty good, smoked malts, some dark toffee, fruit. Solid brew.

Can. Pours a clear dark amber body under a small wispy off-white head that faded pretty quickly. The nose is husky and toasty with some minimal floral hops. The flavor is a bit too sweet for the style, lots of husky and caramel malt with some very light hops. Light bodied and a big clingy with minimal soft carbonation. Pretty boring stuff.
