On tap. Sour/tart aroma, barnyard in fact, hazy apricot, small off white head. Flavour of cranberries is mild, fairly acidic, tart, very dry finish. Interesting.

On tap at Cafe Volo. Dark orange pour. Little head, quickly dissipated. Strong sweet aroma - citrus, spice, malt and alcohol all present. Initial taste was classic strong Belgian Ale, but it did have an odd citrus aspect to it that was initially off-putting. This mellowed with time in the glass and a lot of spiciness emerged which was nice. Mouthfeel was thick and a little syrupy. Again, strong alcohol was present at first but that mellowed as well. Overall, pretty good, but it just took a little work.

Bouteille 660ml.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2004 Well, it was bound to happen eventually - I forgot that I’d had this beer before, and tried it again last night specifically to rate it. I’m glad I did, though, as I enjoyed it much more this time around. My basic description remains the same, but I found the flavour much more pleasant, and bumped the numbers accordingly. [Original review: Orange-pink colour with a decent sized head. Strong and sour cranberry aroma with some spicey notes. Flavour is quite tart and acidic, although there’s some sweetness in the background. I found a small taste of this to be OK, but I can’t imagine drinking a large amount.]

Hazy orange-reddish hue, with a frothy white head, with a nose offering a nice spicy bouquet of cinnamon, ginger and coriander, with a citrus fruity accent of tangerines and manderines and being accompanied by some sour notes from the cranberry juice added, and with a yeasty touch in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a beautiful acidity and a nice sourness from the cranberry juice aspect of the fruit himself, leading dawn his spicy touch of ginger, coriander, even with note of cinnamon, good tartness aspect remembering me of a lambic, with a yeasty character, leading towards a semi-tart and slightly hoppy finish.

Very nice orange cloudy body. Its white/pink head unfortunately do not last long enough. Cherry, coriander, banana, yeast and, above all, cranberries aroma. Robust fruity and spicy taste with a bitter (almost acid) but too short final. Good winter beer. To try with moderately strong cheese.

Bomber from Trappe a Fromage, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: Hazy orange-amber with a so-so off-white head.
Aroma: Quite spicy, lots of orange peel, some ginger, citrus, a good helping of yeast, some nice biscuit malts, fairly fruity, a little tang a touch of diacetyl maybe.
Palate: Medium+ body, fairly full, round effervescence.
Flav.: Lots of spicy orange with clove and ginger taking the spice forefront, some biscuity malts, some yeast, other vague fruitiness; kinda sweet with very little bitterness and an unwelcome sour note, leaves some lemony citrus and dirty yeast behind.
Not very good.

On Tap at Smokeless Joe. Orange-amber in colour. Aroma was slightly sweet. of sour oranges, yeast, peaches and pears. Flavour was kind of a fruit salad with lots of apples, oranges and lemons. Acidic, yeasty and sweet mouthfeel. Medium body, high carbonation. Finishes with a mild sourness, medium length.

Bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy bright orange body with a creamy large white head. The aroma reminds of a triple, what with all of the apples and general fruits, lots of potpourri spices too. Tart and spicy to say the least. Flavour starts out with some sweetish malt but then the tart fruit (cranberry, cherry) overtake it very quickly. Very dry finish. Interesting but it’s not so easy to drink a lot of it.
