3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
What i am looking for in a black ipa is the balance between the hops and the roasted malt flavor. If this was a blind taste test, i would have called this a porter, no way would this be a black ipa. due to the style being so new, there are a lot of brewers right now coming out with black ipa’s that just arent. the roasted malts completely dominate this one with the ipas taking a backseat. great color, palate is fine, aroma is of a porter. so so in my book

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
pretty interesting brew. def bitter, but well balanced by the honey with a nice sweet back palate and finish. nice full body, the honey really comes out in the back part of the palate in all ways. pretty nicely done beer. im getting hints of porters, imperial red ales, old ales, nice variety of things going on here. i was wondering why a waxed ipa, but this may be a bit nicer and more complex when the hop bitterness thats masking it in the front and mid palate begins to disappear a bit. the honey really comes through for me in this brew in such a great way, i keep getting hints of wilf flower honey thoughout. would love another bottle of this to sit on and really see the malt profile shine in a year or so.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
From the bomber, it pours almost black with a light (in both color and volume) tan head. The aroma is of multiple semi-sweet/sweet chocolates, roasts, light spring flowers, some fruit, vanilla extract and hint of peat. The roasted flavors combine with toasted honey and toasty bread. Bitter hops finish the roasty pull, balancing out the malt substances. The finish is woody with some slightly burned peppery cocoa. The mouthfeel is smooth with a substantive body and complex, yet slightly alcoholic palate. It is not a "Black IPA"... it is, by the brewer’s admission, an Imperial Stout brewed with organic honey. A good American swerve on style, it’s bound to be pleasing to many facets of the palate.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Deep brown-black pour. The aroma is earthy and a litte bit spicy with a lot of chocolate through the middle. Softly hoppy and a bit of peppery character. Okay - but not terribly punchy.

3.2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark black with a tan head. Smell is more of roasted malt like a stout rather than hoppy like a dark IPA, which this claims to be. Taste confirms this, but it does have some bitterness to it like an IPA. Very rich beer with a creamy texture and low carbonation. Bitter finish. Overall a good beer but not what I expected - drinks more like an imperial stout than an IPA

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nose is roasty with hints of chocolate and black bread. Hops are somewhat herbal, danky, and peppery. Dark brown, almost black pour with a creamy tan head that settles to a thin film and nice lace. The flavor is dark and roasty, a little nutty, a little chocolate and caramel sweetness, herbal hop bitterness, floral hops, and peppery bite in the finish. A little thin, somewhat dry, spicy, and maybe a little alcoholic.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
From the bottle, pours very dark brown with a thick tan foamy head. Aroma is rich, light coffee, brown sugar, slight alcohol. Taste is thick and a little bitter, a drying alcohol finish. Flavors of espresso, bitter hops, roasted malt, molasses. Pretty solid beer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Wax dipped bottle from Buster’s in Memphis, TN. Pours a deep ruby brown with a foamy tan head. Smells like and drinks like an imperial stout that has been hopped up. Nice beer, even if it wasn’t what I expect in a Black IPA. Malt dominates aroma and flavor, with a nice hop bitterness.
