3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of Elwood. Pours a clear dark, reddish brown with a rich, beige head. Roasty nose, spicy, licoricey, a little citrus character. Bitter finish. Not the most sophisticated, but quite ok. 160612

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
22oz bottle from richdorchak, thanks Rich! Pours a black body with a finger-width, creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma has a big chocolate sweetness with some caramel and molasses as well as a good amount of floral hops. Some sweet citruses, a touch of earth, and a light roast. Flavor is similar. Lots of chocolates as well as some caramel and molasses up front before a moderate mixture of roasts and earth comes in to balance the sweetness. Some floral citruses and a slight ashiness before this finishes dry and moderately bitter, but pretty sweet. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a bit too sweet of a Black IPA for my liking, but not bad. Decent hop and roast balance with no hint of alcohol. This was okay.

3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, 9/23/2011 bottle code on the bottom. Pours pitch black color with a dense 2 finger tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Some good spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big apple skin, roasted malt, chocolate, biscuit, and toast. Aromas are very off balanced, way too much apple aromas. Something went wrong here. Taste of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, toast, biscuit, char, coffee, herbal, pine, and earthy spiciness. Fair amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, char, pine, and herbal spiciness for a good bit. Nice balance of roasted flavors with hop bitterness; with a very robust amount of roasted flavors. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden at 9.5%; with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Very smooth to sip on. Overall this is a nice black IPA that is quite robust with roasted flavors. Other than the obvious fermentation flaws in aromas with this particular bottle, it was still quite enjoyable. I will have to revisit this again and hope I get a better bottle.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2010 Vintage. Served from tap at the brewery release party into an RJ Rockers shaker. Poured a massively dark brown almost black with a one and a half finger light tan head. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of roasted malt, chocolate, and subtle bitter hops. The flavor was of roasted malt, subtle bitter hop that intensified upon swallowing, and very slight chocolate. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a pretty nicely balanced Black IPA. With this one being as fresh as possible the hop character is in full bloom right now. The aroma on this one was quite nice and had a good flavor to follow it up. This one is a must try if you are a fan of the style.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Wonderful aroma of malty coffee, and taste begins a bit thin with a light bittering and slight sweet toffee taste but the aftertaste is pure bittered coffee. An interesting change of pace, not sure about a steady diet, but interesting taste and well presented bottle with itís waxed top.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared by motortoddhead. Deep black pour with mocha head. Aroma of cocoa, caramel, and smokey coffee. Light hops. Flavor is moderate citrus and grapefruit bitterness that gives way to ashy roast and cocoa powder. Mix residual of roast coffee and light citrus.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber from Half Time. Pours very black with a transient tan head. Aroma of dark burnt malt, chocolate and something like herbal hop. And coffee? Full bodied. Flavor is very chocolate, hints of burnt malt, more than hints of coffee, and a fair amount of varying hop. Varying meaning I canít tell what it is. Seems noble/herbal, but thereís so much dark flavor itís hard to break this stuff down. Thereís a barley wine aspect. Thereís an IS aspect. Itís finishing burnt, chocolate, dry and pretty hoppy. Thereís just way too much going on with this. Not that thatís a bad thing.

Bottle poured into glass. Shared with my buds Mike and Phil. Black color with very little head. Slight hoppy aroma, not a ton, with a mix of chocolate. Nothing super special but worth a shot if you can get it.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz bottle. Rating #117. Dense dark black pour with a decent tan head. Sweet dark chocolate aroma, dark fruits with a little bit of hops in the finish. Nice bitterness, more dark chocolate and a light roasty sweetness. Nice stuff, not getting a lot of black IPA character, but still tasty. (2325)

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured opaque black with a nice one finger tan head and ok lace. Aromas of roasted malts, dark chocolate and coffee. Flavors are similar, with just a touch of baking chocolate bitterness and dark fruit. Medium body and carbonation, slightly thin mouthfeel, and a finish that highlighted by the roasted malts.
