3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Aroma has notes of coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, pine and spicy hops. Black hue with an average sized light tan head that mostly diminished and left little lace. Flavor is heavy sweet and very heavy bitter. Palate is full bodied and oily with an above average carbonation. Overall this is a really good brew that really should be called an Imperial Black IPA. Itís a really big beer with good roasted aromas and and intense hop bitterness. Good.

Bomber. Poured deep brown with a tall, sticky, well-retained tan head. The aroma picked up coffee and roasty cocoa topped by green, earthy hops.. a bot strong and raw on the back of the nose. The flavor found very tasty dry-roasted bakerís chocolate and licorice at the core, with fresh earth and light resiny pine bitterness around.. some peppery alcohol too.. finished with nice balance between roasty, bitter, and boozy. Medium-bodied with higher carbonation on the palate.. just a few too many sticky sugars at times, but otherwise a good feel.

Thanks to Suttree for this one. Dark caramely brown with decent tan head. Nose of citrus, raisin, chocolate, caramel. Medium body, good carbonation. Good chocolate and dried fruit flavors with decent bitter hop bite. A departure from other black IPAís Iíve tried. Not sure it fits in that category. Alcohol is well masked. Nice, lasting chocolate covered raisin finish. Very good.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a near black color with a thick caramel colored head. Aroma is of malts, molasses, a slight roastiness, oak, vanilla, and wood chips. Flavor is more of a roasted malt stout style of brew thatís been aged in oak barrels. Caramel, vanilla, and chocolate are also present. Leaves an oaked malt finish. No hops present which is usually a must for IPAís, but it doesnít matter here, this is an all around great brew.

this ale had a black brown pour and made a initial two finger tan colored head that receded to a thin cover, this ale was dark (just a bit of very dark ruby at the very bottom of the glass could be seen when held up to a lamp) and it was hard to see the effervescence in the glass, I did find some trails of fine bubbles flowing up the sides of the glass, this ale left spots and fingers of lacing on the sides of the glass, I saw no sediment on the bottom of the bottle,
there were aromas of toasted and roasted malt, coffee and some dry chocolate with grass and citrus hops not in the background but behind the malt,
the flavors were roasted malt, chocolate and coffee with citrus and spice hops behind the malt (same as the aroma), some toasted bread, brown sugar and caramel sweetness,
the finish had a medium hop bitterness (or a bit less) with roasted malt and some chocolate trailing afterward, there was not much hop bitterness after the finish, and there was a little malt astringency in this drink but not enough to bother me or take away from the enjoyment of this beer but added to the bitterness of this beer,
the mouth feel was about medium with some creaminess on the palate with average carbonation,
this was a nice Black IPA, the flavor was bigger than the nose, I thought the alcohol was hidden well and I could see this ale as a sneaker of a drink, this drink is 9.5% alc., is this a Imperial Black IPA or a Black IPA?

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark brown, almost (not quite) black, with average head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, licorice. Flavor is a very strong roasted-malt (almost like a burnt toast), with some coffee and chocolate, etc., but with the addition of a fairly strong, underlying hop bitterness. This is a very interesting beer.

22oz bottle in a snifter. Pours black with a lacy, tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, a little chocolate, and strong piney/citrusy hops. Flavor about the same, with lots of hops, but not as much roasted malts there could be. Average texture. A pretty good beer.

Bomber shared by friends. A big roasty black brew with a big brown head that looks like many imperial stouts. The flavors struck me as more stout-like than IPA-like with chocolate malt and some dark roast coffee. Itís less thick than most stouts, and finishes with a good amount of peppery hops. Nice black IPA that leans more towards the "black" than the IPA.
