4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a near black color with a thick caramel colored head. Aroma is of malts, molasses, a slight roastiness, oak, vanilla, and wood chips. Flavor is more of a roasted malt stout style of brew thatís been aged in oak barrels. Caramel, vanilla, and chocolate are also present. Leaves an oaked malt finish. No hops present which is usually a must for IPAís, but it doesnít matter here, this is an all around great brew.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured opaque black with a nice one finger tan head and ok lace. Aromas of roasted malts, dark chocolate and coffee. Flavors are similar, with just a touch of baking chocolate bitterness and dark fruit. Medium body and carbonation, slightly thin mouthfeel, and a finish that highlighted by the roasted malts.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz blue wax-dipped bomber from CBX. pours a deep, chestnut brown with a thin, bubbly light tan head and solid lacing. aroma is very nice with mildly sweet, nutty, dark malts and lovely citrus hop note of pink grapefruit and orange along with sweet florals, canned pineapple, and earthy pine that really pop when the glass is swirled. flavor is quite tasty and certainly unique with big, resinous pine hop notes and a touch of citrus initially with nutty, toasted malts, toffee, and cocoa on the back end leading to a bittersweet finish with a touch of roast coffee. palate is medium bodied with mild carbonation and maybe a touch thin for a dipa. overall, and very solid, unique, brew.

What i am looking for in a black ipa is the balance between the hops and the roasted malt flavor. If this was a blind taste test, i would have called this a porter, no way would this be a black ipa. due to the style being so new, there are a lot of brewers right now coming out with black ipaís that just arent. the roasted malts completely dominate this one with the ipas taking a backseat. great color, palate is fine, aroma is of a porter. so so in my book

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a thick black color with a very thin brown head. Kind of syrupy with little carbonation. Weird for a black IPA. Pours more like a stout. Smells pretty chocolately. Taste is a little bitter with some coffee but lots of chocolate. Pretty tasty. Not as bitter as some black IPAs that i have. I like the change of pace.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
pretty interesting brew. def bitter, but well balanced by the honey with a nice sweet back palate and finish. nice full body, the honey really comes out in the back part of the palate in all ways. pretty nicely done beer. im getting hints of porters, imperial red ales, old ales, nice variety of things going on here. i was wondering why a waxed ipa, but this may be a bit nicer and more complex when the hop bitterness thats masking it in the front and mid palate begins to disappear a bit. the honey really comes through for me in this brew in such a great way, i keep getting hints of wilf flower honey thoughout. would love another bottle of this to sit on and really see the malt profile shine in a year or so.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Strong earthy aromas with subtle vanilla and oat notes. Completely solid black with no foam at all. Mellow bitterness from the hops accompanied by a subtle chocolate roast malt flavor. Some toffee and metallic notes on the finish. Overall, I am actually a little disappointed. I was expecting much more to it. Itís very basic and mellow. Iíd give this beer a C rating.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber shared by friends. A big roasty black brew with a big brown head that looks like many imperial stouts. The flavors struck me as more stout-like than IPA-like with chocolate malt and some dark roast coffee. Itís less thick than most stouts, and finishes with a good amount of peppery hops. Nice black IPA that leans more towards the "black" than the IPA.
