Bomber. Poured deep brown with a tall, sticky, well-retained tan head. The aroma picked up coffee and roasty cocoa topped by green, earthy hops.. a bot strong and raw on the back of the nose. The flavor found very tasty dry-roasted bakerís chocolate and licorice at the core, with fresh earth and light resiny pine bitterness around.. some peppery alcohol too.. finished with nice balance between roasty, bitter, and boozy. Medium-bodied with higher carbonation on the palate.. just a few too many sticky sugars at times, but otherwise a good feel.

Sampled at RBWG 2010. The aroma is old ale and oxidized homebrew. The flavor is very bitter but not much hop flavor, just kinda disappointing.

In short: An overly roasted (read Ďtotally burntí) astringent black ipa. Just ok.
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed fresh, early 2011 release batch.
The look: Near black body topped by a small tan head that doesnít leave a lot of lacings on the glass
In long: Nose is of burnt cake, baked fruits and burnt grass. Not smoky, just really burnt ground coffee, grassy hops, cocoa powder, burnt toasts, chalk, vegetal notes, powder milk. Finish is dry and powdery. The beer was very astringent and with each sip it sucked all the saliva, youíll need a pint of water to drink a bomber of this beer. The powdery sensation was like taking a table spoon of flour or dry yeast with each sip. No alcohol presence at all. Despite its flaws I was able to drink my bomber with no efforts by alternating between the beer and a pint of water. This is a decent beer, but below average for the style imho. I was all crazy about Black IPAs when the style first got popular but lately Iíve been disappointed by many of them. Iím not giving up on the style yet because Iím sure there are some good ones out there, Iím not one throw the baby out with the bathwater. I would personally throw it out with the regular garbage, well hidden at the bottom of the bag.

Pours deep red/brown with off white head, aroma is big zesty lemon and orange hops. Taste is grapefruit, lemon, orange up front leading into some smoky and bitter finish. Good version of a dark IPA, much more IPA than dark, but tasty.
