Interesting beer. Pours a medium-dark brown with khaki colored head and lacing. Flavors of roasted malt, vanilla, licorice, bittering hops, coffee, booze, sugar.

UPDATED: DEC 18, 2009 Bottle from SL. The logic was: ooooh, blue wax, new label, black IPA (trendy style), must be fun. Well, it was decent, but nothing great, fun though! Pour was dark brown, well-beyond reddish or orange. The aroma was citrus hops, slight roasty elements. The flavor was roasty, ashy, choco, and then some piney and citrus hops. Really a decent brew, but the malt base underneath was a bit too sweet, and I wanted more hops. This came across as a hoppy porter instead of a black IPA. Fun stuffs, though. Mouthfeel moderate for the style. Good warmup beer for the night, where the Eagles whooped up on them Gints!

Black IPA’s are fun. This one was not really aggressive on the hoppage was more like a slightly hoppy porter. I think these things fare better with an american hop profile....but that’s just me.

The Dan Journal #323. Tasted 1/18/10. 22oz bomber. Dark with a ruby brown hue. Trace ring of khaki head. Aromas of caramel and cinnamon buns with a backseat of grapefruit. Medium bodied with a cocoa and cola flavor. Dark toasty malts and very dry on the finish. Hops are bitter but with a higher astringency.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Norm’s, 1/28/10

Aroma: Nose of chocolate, roasted malts, toast, caramel, pine, citrus, and nuts
Appearance: Dark brown beer with a minimal tan head and spotty lace
Flavor: Taste is roasted malts and bittersweet chocolate mostly, some bitterness
Palate: Medium-full bodied beer with soft carbonation and a bit astringent, booze are well-hidden
Overall Impression: This one only has a few ratings thus far, looks like a relatively new offering. I wouldn’t describe this as a DIPA/IIPA at all. It kind of has the feel of a porter, it isn’t what I would call a hoppy beer. I think I would like this beer more if they hadn’t tried to sell it to me as an IPA, so I’m taking off a bit from the overall for that. It doesn’t fit the style at all, but it is pretty good.

Bottle (dregs)… RBWG ‘10… Dark brown ale with a mid-sized, creamy, off-white head. Excellent retention. The bouquet is reserved - I get chocolate, but not a boatload of hops. Medium-bodied and raspy with mostly expired carbonation. Chocolaty flavor with medium to heavy charred bitterness. Finishes very bitter and way dry. Bottle courtesy of kp!

20100515 Sampled at PilsnerPeter’s 2nd Annual Spring Gathering. Bomber from Honeygo. Surprisingly and probably unnecessarily big beer if they’re going to call it an IPA, but whatever it was plenty decent, nice and roasty, pretty sweet throughout but finishing hot and alcohol dry. Some lingering resinous bitterness.
