This "typical" beer has an aroma of wheat, caramel malt and yeast, which give it its legendary spicy taste. Bottle refermentation imparts a yeast enriched flavor.

Formerly known as Cheval Blanc Rousse, now only as Spéciale Rousse.

341ml bottle. Pours a hazy rosy orange colour with considerable tiny sediment floaters, and a thin clumsy bubbled off-white head that disappeared almost immediately. Caramel, dried apricots, light dark sugars, yeast, light raspberry jam notes, and very faint tropical fruit in the nose. Taste wise, light bodied, and much drier than expected with bock-like dark sugar notes, maple, yeast, and light bread notes that are slightly hidden in the beers watery palate. I like it. It’s easy drinking stuff with just enough flavour to keep it interesting. If I wanted a couple of Belgian styled ales to drink in the hot weather, this would be a good choice at 5%.

Bottle 341ml [Cap Espoir] Pours amber with low off-white head. No lacing. Aroma is of malt, caramel, weird belgian yeast, weird fruits. Taste is of malt, caramel, some very slight bitterness, hints of acidity. Yeast, sugar, citrus. Palate: Light-medium body. Oily texture. Overall: Not gross, but there is certainly something not really enjoyable here. Seems to come form yeast/fermentation by-products. A tad off.

Doesn’t have much of a smell other than a little wheat. Pours with alright lacing with a murky brown colour. Richer than the Cap Grisou I just had. Has a nice wheaty aftertaste. Tastes like a German hefeweizen kind of. More yeast than anything else actually. Bottle was Cap Espoire from a d-pan in Montreal.

341 ml bottle from Gatineau IGA (as Cap Espoir). Pours a cloudy orangey amber colour with small off-white head. Aroma is fruit, wheat, caramel and spice. Flavour is banana, pear, lightly toasty wheat, some sweet caramel and clove. A little watery. Decent though.

Pours a hazy copper with no head except for a small white rim that leaves some lacing. Nose is fresh and spicy, offers some toasty notes. Taste is of fruits and spices, coriander wouldn’t have been my guess. More toasted bran notes. Body is medium and carbonation medium-high. Not bad at all for what it is!

Last call! J’aime.
