UPDATED: SEP 27, 2008 Bottled at the brewpub. Pale brown, small head. Light tarry smoke aroma. Medium sweet and medium bodied with well rounded mouthfeel. Evidently smokey with tar as prime ingredient. salty quite bitter finish with lingering tar pastilles and salmiak. Very interesting rauchbier.

Jukkabro (3484) - Tampere, FINLAND - SEP 18, 2007
(BBE 9/07) Dark yellow colored, little white head. Aroma is rather lagerish, though very rich one: fruits, sweetness and nicely balanced smoke with good hops. Medium bodied. Flavor is also nice with with smoke, fruits, mild caramel and convenient hops. Aftertaste dries. This one gets better while glass gets emptier, finely balanced smoke-brew.

bottle, Danke MoritzF! Slightly hazy amber colour, rather small head. Smoky and fruity aroma. Fruity and smoky flavour, quite malty, rounded off by a hoppy and pleasantly bitter finish and a smoky-bitter aftertaste.

Draft. A slighlty hazy orange beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma is sweet and rather smoky with notes of rope. The flavor is sweet with good notes of smoke from beechwood, though a bit less than in the aroma, also notes of rope. The body is a bit light, but otherwise nice.

MoritzF (8464) - Bochum, GERMANY - JUL 30, 2007
(swing top bottle) Hazy, orange to light amber colour with a medium-sized foamy white head. Rather strong smoked malt aroma with light grainy impressions and some spicy, herbal hops in the background. Light-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Smoke malty base with underlying grainy, cookie-like notes; medium-dry, smoky and grainy finish with a faint touch of herbal hops. Not perfectly balanced but still a goodie for lovers of smoked beer.

tiggmtl (4548) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 28, 2006
Mild smoke underlines the toasty, biscuity malt character in the aroma. Clear, copper coloured body is topped by a decent, fine bubbled, white head that recedes to a lasting cover with some sudsy lacing. Salty, dry and fruity with very rough, hard bitterness. Herbal, minty notes in the aftertaste. Very dry medium body with moderate carbonation. Bottle (BB 24/08/06) sampled in July with MartinT, muzzlehatch and Olivier_MTL.

Papsoe (25088) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - NOV 17, 2006
(On tap) Clear, amber golden with a tiny head. Distinct aroma of smoke. Medium body completely dominated by smoke - the underlying malt is hard to detect. Lightly hoppy finish. 091106

muzzlehatch (4424) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - JUL 23, 2006
500 ml bottle graciously provided by Bamberg explorer MartinT and shared with him, Rastacouere and tiggmtl. Clear golden body with a lasting, creamy white head....faint sweet fruitwood smokiness and light sweet herbs on the nose, increasing earthy, peaty character as it warms....the tongue surprisingly shows intense, bitterly acrid flavors, quite burnt and tarry, salty and exceptionally dry....the full body supports this difficult flavor profile, the moderate carbonation seems appropriate. A difficult one, but enjoyable on the whole.

   AROMA 6/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 14/20
MartinT (7797) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 20, 2006
Any first impressions?
-Wealthy foam covers the clear golden.
-Dry earth produces some vegetal character within the delicately smoky aroma.
-Off-the-wall hop flavor and bitterness carries salty and vegetal masks; an intriguing personality disorder.
-The crisp mouthfeel is impressed by the prickly carbonation, which in the end takes too much room.

What if you dig deeper?
-An intense, dry herbal hop bitterness borders on being astringent.
-A sun-drenched haystack on which salt is sprinkled.
-Apple wood fruitiness shows up in the nose.
-This is an eccentric landbier no doubt, with some smoked malt character on the side, but not enough to please this rauch lover.

Bottle; best before August ’06.

pivnizub (8805) - Bochum, Porúří, GERMANY - DEC 16, 2005
Bottle (bought at the brewery): Clear, light amber coloured; thin but stable fluffy head; smoked ham, charcoal in the nose, a touch of malts, too; moderate bitter flavour, light bodied; smoked finish with a strong bitterness. A bit unpleasant, not very harmonic: the quite strong, harsh hoppiness doesn’t harmonize well with the smoke.......
