Old Tom's label says "Barley Wine" but underneath it a tiny black sticker says "Style Ale" (importers?) This rather complex beer comes out of the bottle looking like black coffee...until you see the light hitting it and sending out flickers of lovely garnet red. Quite striking. The beer has medium carbonation and a small lacy tan head. Aromatics are not as malt saturated as you might expect and there's noticeable toffee, maybe chocolate and bark (licorice, or sassafras) or root-like characteristics. Nice, but subtle herbal hops and dried fruit, too. The mouthfeel is rich and silky, not syrupy, well flavored and very drinkable. The finish is pleasantly bitter and almost dry. Nice, but somehow not a home run.

My Bottom Line:
This refined Old Ale delights through its complex profile of raisins, licorice and earth evolving into a lovely finish featuring cherry pits, hop bitterness, alcohol heat and dates.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy dollop of foam fades to a veil atop the translucent mahogany-hued dark brown.
-The flavor profile is balanced and intelligently put together.
-This is surprisingly dry for the style.
-The comfy effervescence and slender body make this an easy sipping beer.
-This is one of those few beers that would do quite well with some oxidation.
-The finish also recalls inverted sugars and specialty malt lengths ŕ la Dark Mild.

Cola dark beer with a small head. Sweet syrup on the nose. Soft mouth feel. Some sweetness, no bitterness. Medium body. Notes of alcohol. Decent brown ale.

Láhev 330 ml. Aroma je sušenkové, hlinité s lehkým nádechem banánových slupek. Pěna je světle hnědé barvy, jemná, nízká a nedržící. Barva samotného piva je tmavě hnědá. Chuť piva je lehčí sladová s nádechem alkoholu, hlinitý střed s nepříliš výraznými kávovými okraji, finiš je kávově hořký s lehkým banánovým nádechem. Celková chuť je prostoupena slabším závanem alkoholu. Vcelku se jedná o zajímavé pivo, originální chuti s horší pitelností.

Deep red, near brown colour, small tan head. Aroma - Stewed red fruit, raisins, vinous, caramel and brown sugar. Taste - follows nose, red currants, syrup, quite easy for the abv. Mid sweet with some bitterness. Reminds me of a Belgium dubbel without the phenols.

Pours in dark color with almost no head. Aroma consists of dark fruits such as dried raisins, nuts, light alcohol, caramel. Taste is high on alcohol at first sip, goes in well balanced sweetness with little bit harsh bitterness. Body is light, oily with fair carbonation. A nice old ale indeed.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s. It pours darkest ruby with a medium beige head. The nose is roasted malt, toast, spice, charred wood, cocoa, dark fruit and jammy berry. The taste is toasty, dark fruit, berry, vinous, wood, earth, light bitterness, chewy malt, spice, cocoa, varnish and some alcohol with a dry finish. Medium+ body and fine carbonation. Interesting, flavoursome and good depth. A classic.

Nice brew for a regular day. Pours out a dark muddy brown with a thcik beige head. The nose is mild but has nice roasted and chocolate malt notes regardless. A bit sweet and rich in the middle with a heavy toasted, roasted malt with toffee, chocolate and caramel. The finish has mild bitterness and has a clean balanced feel.

Stop reading and go drink this. Right. Now. Fruity aroma. Dark chocolate brown pour, very light head. Classic dry ale finish you’d expect in a British pub ale, but so much more character and flavor. More like a porter at times. My god.
