Old Tom's label says "Barley Wine" but underneath it a tiny black sticker says "Style Ale" (importers?) This rather complex beer comes out of the bottle looking like black coffee...until you see the light hitting it and sending out flickers of lovely garnet red. Quite striking. The beer has medium carbonation and a small lacy tan head. Aromatics are not as malt saturated as you might expect and there's noticeable toffee, maybe chocolate and bark (licorice, or sassafras) or root-like characteristics. Nice, but subtle herbal hops and dried fruit, too. The mouthfeel is rich and silky, not syrupy, well flavored and very drinkable. The finish is pleasantly bitter and almost dry. Nice, but somehow not a home run.

Pours dark reddish brown, clear. Small lacy head. Once the head dissipates, it has roughly the appearance of cola. Chocolate malt is apparent n the aroma. Loads of malt flavor. Medium body. Lively. Long-lasting nutty aftertaste. Quite nice.

Almost black, opaque. A few varied-sized tan bubbles. Not much aroma, a bit of malt. A complex balance of delicate flavors, with a surprisingly thin body. High quality.

Classic English old ale, from a stubby bottle with sober, small label. I believe in getting to know the classics in each beer style before venturing into the hybrids and the extremities and I hadn’t tasted this one before, so here we go. Loose, milky, irregular, pale beige head over a practically clear, purplish burgundy coloured beer, like a very dark red wine. The typical cooked, ’industrial’ odour of pasteurization is unmistakable in the nose, but there are more redeeming qualities as well: I get impressions of rhum-soaked raisins, overripe blue plums, candied figs, brown sugar and butter melting on a hot pancake, almond, milk chocolate, pepper, ’speculoos’, cinnamon, kahlua, hints of vanilla and aniseed (probably just phenols). Sweet onset, candied fruits, dates, raisins, dry banana surrounded by a soft, basic sourishness, soft carbo, smooth, notably resinous and supple mouthfeel, caramelly and nutty malts with a strong toasted edge in the end, bittersweet, peppery hops accent adding more bitterness, warming rhum-like alcohol in the end. Considering this is filtered and pasteurized, I don’t think it is very useful to cellar it for an extended period of time. So in its youth, this is a Christmas pie kind of beer, spicy, sweet and lush, with the dash of alcohol adding warmth. Decent winter warmer and indeed a good example for those who want to get to know the traditional English old ale style.

Dark clear ruby color with little foam. The smell is heavy with licorice and hints of strong red wine. The taste has a mild mouth feeling, but is quite heavy. A lot of ancient licorice. A little bit like a heavy stout without all the coffee. Appropriate aftertaste.

Aroma of caramel, dried plum, liquorice and cocoa. Flavours of dried fruits, mainly plum, caramel, liquorice, slighlty port like. Medium warm finish with dried fruits. Medium body and carbo. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle into a pint glass. Pours mahogany, with a small khaki head that quickly fades. Moderate lacing. Nose is plums and figs, dark malt. Taste is a bit on the sweet side, with dark malt and dark fruit predominate. Creamy mouth feel with a long, smooth finish. Very good representative of the style.

Swaroga (1826) - Brussels, BELGIUM - AUG 21, 2015
Brown with medium head. The beer has a strong dried and cooked dark fruit aroma with a bit smoke, bubblegum, honey and cake. Flavor is quite the same. Well balanced and the alcohol seam to be well hidden. Soft carbonation and medium density but oily mouth feel. Aftertaste is spicy with dried plum sourness. Good one.

Escura com raios avermelhados e média formação de espuma. Notas de toffee, malte tostado, chocolate, café e lúpulo floral. Corpo médio com final longo e retrogosto bem maltado e com amargor acentuado.
