3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
11.2oz. bottle served in a Celebrator glass. Poured a deep reddish brown with a finger of light tan head. Fruit, molasses and a light hop aroma. Nice and malty with more molasses, caramel and some dark fruit. Fair amount of carbonation. Medium bodied. Hoppier finish than I would have expected from a British beer. Nice example of a British Old Ale.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Classic English old ale, from a stubby bottle with sober, small label. I believe in getting to know the classics in each beer style before venturing into the hybrids and the extremities and I hadn’t tasted this one before, so here we go. Loose, milky, irregular, pale beige head over a practically clear, purplish burgundy coloured beer, like a very dark red wine. The typical cooked, ’industrial’ odour of pasteurization is unmistakable in the nose, but there are more redeeming qualities as well: I get impressions of rhum-soaked raisins, overripe blue plums, candied figs, brown sugar and butter melting on a hot pancake, almond, milk chocolate, pepper, ’speculoos’, cinnamon, kahlua, hints of vanilla and aniseed (probably just phenols). Sweet onset, candied fruits, dates, raisins, dry banana surrounded by a soft, basic sourishness, soft carbo, smooth, notably resinous and supple mouthfeel, caramelly and nutty malts with a strong toasted edge in the end, bittersweet, peppery hops accent adding more bitterness, warming rhum-like alcohol in the end. Considering this is filtered and pasteurized, I don’t think it is very useful to cellar it for an extended period of time. So in its youth, this is a Christmas pie kind of beer, spicy, sweet and lush, with the dash of alcohol adding warmth. Decent winter warmer and indeed a good example for those who want to get to know the traditional English old ale style.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark clear ruby color with little foam. The smell is heavy with licorice and hints of strong red wine. The taste has a mild mouth feeling, but is quite heavy. A lot of ancient licorice. A little bit like a heavy stout without all the coffee. Appropriate aftertaste.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle into a pint glass. Pours mahogany, with a small khaki head that quickly fades. Moderate lacing. Nose is plums and figs, dark malt. Taste is a bit on the sweet side, with dark malt and dark fruit predominate. Creamy mouth feel with a long, smooth finish. Very good representative of the style.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Brown with medium head. The beer has a strong dried and cooked dark fruit aroma with a bit smoke, bubblegum, honey and cake. Flavor is quite the same. Well balanced and the alcohol seam to be well hidden. Soft carbonation and medium density but oily mouth feel. Aftertaste is spicy with dried plum sourness. Good one.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aroma: chocolate, roasted nuts, burnt caramel
Taste: medium bitter, little sweet
Palate: thin, but quite a mouthful
Overall: really good ale with its own character somewhere between a belgian double, a stout and a porter.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, 330ml. A clear dark ruby beer with a big foamy head. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, nuts, molasses and spices. Taste is bitter with a strong finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and astringency. Rich character that reminds me of port wine,
