COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Durban Pale Ale, was inspired by the original IPA’s produced in Britian and then shipped to India for consumption by the soldiers and bureaucrats. The IPA came via the Cape and records show that some of that beer made its way to the British serving in South Africa. With Durban then, as now, a major shipping port it is hard not to believe that barrels of IPA were happily consumed here on the East Coast, so we wanted to revive an old tradition. We only use the best malts for our Pale Ale, and in order to achieve our 5.7% ABV we need to pack the mash tun full of grains. The beer is also crammed full of hops to achieve the 40 units of bitterness that we want. We use Cascade hops since they don’t leave any lingering bitterness or harshness on the palate. The inclusion of Challenger hops provide the crisp, fruitiness characteristic of the beer, which is complimented by the special strain of English ale yeast that we use to ferment the beer. Our Durban Pale Ale is a strong beer and we have found that its character will change over time if cellared, producing an even more complex ale.

Bottle from Roeland Liquors, Cape Town. Hazy yellow pour, thin white head. Aroma of Belgian Hops, spices, a bit chemical. Flavor is very bitter, dry and spicy. A bit harsh and rough, mostly just a bit too bitter. Not bad though.

This is their best beer under their own brand. Pale and cloudy, it has an appetizing appearance. Beyond that, it’s fairly dry, with good complexity and the clearest hop character of their three pale ales.

Crystal clear deep orange tinted copper coloured body with a perfect, three centimetre tall tan head - looks great. Aroma of bright yeast, malt, citrus, light grassy hops and a bunch of herbal notes. Medium-bodied; Assertive earthy and grassy hops up front with a nice malt backbone and a citrus, yet yeastie finish. Aftertaste is subdued with most of the flavours showing citrus and hoppiness, but a subtle sweetness then bitterness finishes it off. Overall, not an amazing pale (I would also clarify this one as an APA), but one of the better beers I’ve sampled IN or brought back home from South Africa. I sampled this (i’ve only seen these in ZA) stubby, but large 550 mL bottle purchased from Simon’s Town Bottle Shop in Simon’s Town, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa on 31-December-2011 for ZAR22,90 brought back to the opposite side of the world and sampled at home in Washington on 14-June-2012 a few days before leaving again for South Africa.

550ml bottle. Hazy golden with copper highlights. The head is rather short and doesn’t last but it leaves a little ring of lace. Light floral and citrus notes dominate the nose with a slight sweet edge. A little green on the palate with an odd finish that tries to be bitter but doesn’t quite make it.
