COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
East Coast Ale, is our South African inspired beer. Most of the year ShongweniValley and the nearby City of Durban are bathed in warm, sub-tropical sunshine, but we do get the odd surprise from Summer storms that refresh the air and make the bush grow again. The people of this area are exciting, diverse and full of energy and optimism. We wanted to capture this spirit of the East Coast in our beer and we think we have. East Coast Ale is a lively, refreshing, smooth, golden ale. We make East Coast Ale using a single malt variety and two kinds of hops, Brewers Gold and Challenger. Brewers Gold provides an excellent balanced bitterness especially when combined with a late aroma hop in golden beers. We achieve this using Challenger hops to give a crisp, fruity character, resulting in a beer with around 25 bitterness units and an ABV of 4%. This beer is fermented using a special ale yeast that imparts its own character to the beer.

(bottle, 34cl) Hazy, pale golden colour with a short frothy layer. Yeasty, pale malty aroma with discreetly fruity notes of citrus/lemon and pears. Sweet-bitter flavour, light bodied but not watery; smooth carbonation. Pale malt-character with notes of white bread and lemony fruity notes; mildly bitter and subtle fruity hoppy finish. 10.XII.10

340ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden with no head. Aroma is skunky and some grassy hops. A bit buttery to start then a hint of lemon. Nice hop bite on the finish. Boring.

Bottle from Drinks World, Harborne, Birmingham. Bad smell - like wet rubbish, or flowers on the turn. Flavour is something approaching nice, but doesn’t quite make it. Sunshiny, weak pineapple. Pale taste. Not quite.

340ml bottle from Bacchanalia, Cambridge. Poured hazy amber with a trace of white head, heavy sediment and light carbonation; sweet, grainy aroma; smooth with a malty flavour and a soapy texture; the finish is crisp and biscuity, with perhaps a hint of wet cardboard about it. THis is much less impressive than the West Coast Ale.

2nd August 2008. Slightly cloudy amber beer. Very mild hops and not much else. Okay ice cold on a hot day. At least one beer from this brewery is drinkable!

Bottled, 340ml, from Beers of Europe. Pale gold with white head. After the Durban Pale Ale hopes were high, but this is a touch disappointing. Thin hoppy note and somewhat sweet, it could do with a little more bite. Chivvies itself up with a dry close to improve the score.

Pours hazy golden with small white head. Aroma is fruity, bready malt and a touch of diacetyl (not good). Flavour is sweet, fruity, honey, with low bitterness. Insufficiently hopped and poorly balanced.

Bit unclear golden with a medium short white head. Aroma of hops and some bitterness, slightly metallic. Soft bitter hoppy flavour with some malt and a little sweetness. Bit dry finish. Rather boring.
