Our West Coast Ale is inspired by the craft brewers of the American West Coast. We use two types of malted barley in our West Coast Ale including a fair proportion of crystal barley. Using Cascade and Northern Brewer hops we make four separate hop additions to the boil to ensure that we get the right balance of aroma and bitterness in this 5% ABV beer. Fermented at colder temperatures than our other beers and retained in the brewery for at least eight weeks conditioning we end up with a balanced, smooth, and surprisingly easy drinking beer. In the glass the initial rich aroma of biscuity malt is complemented by the spicy character of the hop. The beer pours clear with an intense ruby-red / brown colour and a well developed head that produces a lace-work pattern on the glass as the beer is drunk. The beer is medium bodied, and smooth on the palate which is initially dominated by characteristic crystal malt flavours and then followed by a well balanced hop character in both aroma and a pleasant fruity, or spicy, hop palate.

Very malty aroma and flavor but notes of diacetyl. The bottle I have is from 2009 and it hasn’t aged well. Wishing I had another one because I was really impressed with this beer when I shared one with the owner back in 2010. Very cool guy!

Bottle from Utobeer. Dark brown with a tan head. Refreshing exotic fruits hoppiness blending with a hint of roasted malts aroma. Passion fruit and smokey malts flavours- good dryness. Seriously good stuff from a (beery) black continent.

340ml bottle from Bacchanalia, Cambridge. Poured hazy reddish amber with a thin cream head, heavy sediment and light carbonation; sharp resinous hop aroma; thin, watery body with a strongly hoppy flavour and a soapy texture - very much in the American style; the finish is fruity and spicy and dry from the hops.

Bottle courtesy of Chris and Judy and shared with Alfie. Dark brown with an off white head. Yes, I should have noticed the instruction on the label to ’pour to retain yeast in bottle’. The result was a murky, muddy appearance, though it had looked fine in vitro. Strong aroma slowly developed of treacly malt with spicy hops. A little sweet maltiness in the taste was soon replaced by a strawy, nettly hoppiness with a hint of cigarette ash. It went particularly well with a sweet iced bombe for dessert at lunch on New Year’s Day.

Pours a hazy red, deep amber. Light copper head. Aroma of sweet malt, light hops, grapefruit. Taste of grapefruit bitterness and light maltiness. Very drinkable. Easily the best beer I’ve tasted in South Africa and I recommend it if you’re here.

Bottle from Drinks World, Harborne. Dark treacle colour. Delicious aroma of hops and pepper. Biscuit, brown sugar, some berry on a US style hop background. Not a proper IPA hop flavour, but hints of it. Overall, the taste doesn’t match the aroma, but it’s pretty tasty.
