Braincage1 (137), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Aug 8, 2009 Bottle. Dark murky brown appearance with a tall light brown head. A heavenly aroma of spiced and sweet fruit and imbued with the same great flavors. Best marks for the aroma Listigovers (96), Ontario, Canada Aug 4, 2009 Bottle at Beer Bistro, in tulip glass? Must have ran out of clean Rochefort ones, they’re usually very good about proper glassware. Aroma is extremely similar to wine, except with all sorts of funky fruity notes. Pours opaque brown, almost no head. A slight bit alcoholic, which would have been very pleasant on a cold day, was the only loss in points for this wonderful beer on a warm day. The flavour was, quite frankly, too complex for me to comprehend. Huge burst of flavours, sparkly mouthfeel, and a aftertaste that doesn’t leave.
My 150th beer! KyotoLefty (1370), Kyoto, Japan Aug 2, 2009 Sweet fruity aroma: raisin, chocolate, dried persimmons, licorice. Very complex and fruity. Flavor: nutty caramel, figs, raisins, cinnamon? Alcohol. Sweet but alcohol balances, plus a bit of burnt malt. Full but rather light in the mouth, and very fizzy. Bittersweet burn left after the swallow. A delight, as always, though I prefer it a little better aged. It was still a little young and harsh, with very strong alcohol. .
Fagner (19), São Paulo, Brazil Aug 1, 2009 Bottle at São Paulo (Brazil) and also (a confirmatory one) in Brussels - dark beer, with a little head, dried fruits aroma and taste... a little coffee aroma as well... well worth it beer for sure. drewaha (16), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 31, 2009 Wow. It is possibly as good as they get. I had this beer with a variety of pork dishes, and what a combination it was.
The beer is dark like Coke with just a little head. Slightly sweet, caramely taste and not much bitterness. Definiltely hard to have two of these in one sitting because it is so heavy but it is well worth it MereLikesBeer (153), Royal Oak, Michigan, USA Jul 30, 2009 I shared a bottle of this with BeerBaron617, and it was a good thing to do so. Now, I really do enjoy a Belgian style beer, but this one had something different going on with it. It certainly had a strange murky looking body - a dark raisin brown with a lot of sediment hanging around in the glass. It had a small light brown head as well. Aroma was really fantastic. Certainly a lot of dark fruits, rum-raisin, plums, dates, sweet brown sugar... Taste was quite a bit like wine...but not really? I don’t know, it was almost like a cola, very carbonated and it had a bit of a syrupy mouthfeel. Overall, it was definitely a good beer. BeerBaron617 (306), Novi, Michigan, USA Jul 30, 2009 Split an 11.2 oz bottle with merelikesbeer, which came courtesy of my pops. Well, this stuff is definitely worth the hype. It’s not the prettiest beer, but it was incredible. Lots of plum, raisin, and even some brandy/cognac notes. Very very tasty. Can’t wait to try more from this brewer. Cheers! m4rest88 (216), Beverly Hills, California, USA Jul 30, 2009 Dark brown hue, with a small light brown head that is mostly diminishing.
Aroma is of chocolate, raisins, alcohol - tequila, and caramel.
Flavor is of coffee, and dark fruits that lends to its spicey sweet flavor.
Medium - Syrupy mouthfeel. Light carbonation.
