MennoO (112), Haarlem, Netherlands Jul 16, 2009 bottle, black clear liquid with creamy head. very complex though very drinkable brew. this is good stuff beerchugger (285), Colorado, USA Jul 15, 2009 Updated: Sep 28, 2009Pours very dark with a soft off-white head forming atop leaving a thin white layer over time. The aroma is fantastic! It smells a bit like jam from the huge aromas of plums and there’s a brandy aroma that is equally as strong and amazing. These aromas really strike out and grab your attention. Other sweet dark fruits like figs and dates really come together nicely alongside the deep rich caramel and nutty aromas. The nose is just incredible! I could sit and take in whiffs of this all day long!
The carbonation is rather lively on the palate. Again, the taste is very plumy and the other dark fruits are very noticeable. The brandy comes through a little as well, but the rich nuttiness and the sweet dark fruits really come out. It’s rather soft on the palate and a little sweet in the finish. Hopper (271), San Antonio, Texas, USA Jul 14, 2009 Pours dark brown with massive head. Aroma of dark fermented fruit. Taste of the same with a lot of complexity that is hard to put a finger on, I did get a slight taste of leather even though I do not know what leather taste like, but it was in a good way. Ygberg (82), Sweden Jul 13, 2009 Updated: Oct 3, 2009Aroma of apricot, fermented fruit and cherries. Appearance is very dark brown with a nice head. The flavor is sweet, prune, liquorish and alcohol, also a bit sour aftertaste. This is a real classic. However the different bottles seem to differ a bit. This was not the best bottle I’ve had. JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Jul 12, 2009 Bottle at Winking Lizard Crosswoods location. Opaque brown pour with a huge tan head. Sorta of tart aroma that is also very creamy and yeasty. Notes of alcohol and dark fruits as well. Creamy and yeasty flavor with a touch of sourness and alcohol. Dark fruits and a bit of chocolate in there. MmmcKay (269), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA Jul 11, 2009 Finally tried this classic brew after seeing it come and go too many times from my store. Dark cloudy brown, almost black. Nice thick head that appropriately coats the glass. I was surprised by the nose. The aromas were more of dark fruits like cassis, plum, dark cherries, and raisins. I was expecting more maltiness, brown sugar, and molasses. Pleasantly surprised. The mouth feel was my favorite part of the beer. Rich and creamy with impeccable balance. For 11.3% the alcohol flavors are almost non existent. I think this bottle was young though, because the complexities were not quite there yet. Still a wonderful brew. Great experience. Drank next to a Avery Reverend (quad as well). No comparison what so ever. The Rochefort blows it away. toshe (6), Derbyshire, England does not count Jul 11, 2009 From bottle. Cinnamon, brown sugar and malt make up a rather rich aroma. Deep walnut colour with a frothy tan head. It looks fantastic and formed how you would like a beer too. Rich syrup like texture. Full bodied flavour. Spices, fruit and hops. This beer is like sitting next to a fireplace. It makes you fell warm and content. Its like a fine sherry or port. Its complex smooth finish makes for a fine ale. Its almost perfect. I love this beer.
