PapaSkeetSkeet (65), , Massachusetts, USA Jul 10, 2009 Updated: Jul 11, 2009Pours cloudy dark brown with lively carbonation and a lasting off-white head. Considerable yeast at bottom. Aroma is sour cherry, alcohol, yeast, apple, soggy toast. Very carbonated feel. Burnt, especially in the finish. Considerable alcohol, with those dark fermented fruit tastes infused slightly. Finish is fairly short, little bitterness. Bit of banana. I think of the concept of darkness when I drink this beer. Perhaps I’ll turn the light off. Now I think of silence, so I turn the music off. This is a beer of muted senses, belittlement beneath a vast black sky of stars. A deeper swig reveals a more complex flavor with fruits coming through in the middle. Once the alcohol begins to hit you, the flavors and the aroma dissolve together into a very favorable final impression. I like it, but I would still says it does not live up to my expectation- perhaps I do not enjoy a good quad as much as a stout or belgian porter. Still excellent beer. spkevin (56), Doetinchem, Netherlands Jul 9, 2009 bottle @ home. great, great beer. Liked this one better than the sint bernardus abt 12. great aroma. coudn’t stop sniffing the beer. great mouthfeel en full aftertaste. To bad that is a bit expensive. Will surely drink this one again! chrisv10 (335), Denmark Jul 9, 2009 33cl bottle. Cloudy brown body with medium size tan head. Flavour is malt, sweet and fruit. Pours like a good root beer - 2-finger frothy, velvety head with nice lacing. Good carbonation. Not so thick it’s opaque, rather a little translucent.
Spice profile is surprisingly subtle - needs to warm/open up. Mellow molasses aroma mixes with yeast & malt. Some ginger emerges.
Everything on the nose comes out in a well-balanced, mellow package - a little ginger, hearty yeast and malt without any bitter taste or comforting stuff. Extremely well-balanced - like a warm blanket on a camping trip.
Feels like soothing ginger beer with very mild carbonation. Delightful, relaxing mouthfeel.
This is wonderful, easy-drinking stuff that’s not too heavy for the style. Incredible quadrupel!
bconley (351), Fern Park, Florida, USA Jul 9, 2009 Happy #300! Drinking it now. Dark reddy brown color. Tan head. Smells sweet and malty. Tastes really dark fruit, like dates and raisins and some slight dark cherry tanginess. Nice carbonation, really really good. satan165 (540), River Grove, Illinois, USA Jul 7, 2009 Updated: Jul 12, 2009opaque with picture perfect head that sits quietly minding its own business like a well trained dog crouching, awaiting command. aroma is immediately sweet, nearly of roasted malt, followed by the standard pit fruit -- raisins, and even grapes in front. flavor is strong of prunes that come with (or cause) more of the mystery sweetness from the nose. what a sudden yet relaxing beer. it sneaks up on you but only to give you a hug or a caress. molasses with a hidden heat source (massive ABV) comes next to greet you, like the anesthetist asking you to count backwards from 10. Elwood (647), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Jul 7, 2009 11.2 oz. bottle. Pours a cloudy dark brown with a foamy, light tan head. Ripe fruit, dark cherries, horse blanket, and yeast make up a complex nose. Highly carbonated with a medium-light, slightly dry mouthfeel. Boozy fruit, grass, hay, and a slight vinous note make up a complex palate. Sweet, but light and enjoyable. The alcohol is almost completely hidden. Light caramel and brown sugar notes emerge as the beer warms. Medium-short finish with some lingering caramel notes. This beer has great balance all the way around and is truly one of the best beers I’ve ever had. Dangerously sessionable, but better reserved for enjoyment after dinner. I will definitely keep this one on hand at all times. Pver (3), Hasselt, Belgium does not count Jul 7, 2009 Almost as good as Westvleteren. I enjoy almost all Trappist beers for their complex tastes, for their history but also for the fact that you do make a difference when you drink one, certainly for Westvleteren and Rochefort as these are the smallest, less commercial breweries.
Nice head, tastes of caramel and dried plums, raisins and just a touch of maltyness. Very good moment
