dnas2 (627), Yelverton, Devon., Devon, England Apr 8, 2009 Poured cloudy brown with a quickly dissipating head. Sweet berry fruit and a sugary scent. Sticky and well carbonated. Sugars, some lemon and otherwise not dissimilar to a red wine. Not much malt discernible. Nice but a bit too rich for me. monkeychugg55 (207), Joliet, Illinois, USA Apr 7, 2009 Poured a deep dark brown with a long lasting beige head. Aroma seems to come through more as the head retreats; chocolate, toffee, dark fruit, raisin, white wine, sweetness from the malt, and just a fine hint of alcohol. Holy shit!!! The taste is remarkable. Flavor is similar to aroma, except for mellow hops and stronger malt presence. Surprisingly, high abv not detected until tail end of the clean, slightly dry finish. This stuff is magical.
s3kt0r (3), Seattle, Washington, USA does not count Apr 7, 2009 I figured I’d use my first rating to rate one of my favorite beers. A fantastic beer. This is one of the few big beers where the alcohol tastes like it is specifically there to add to the overall depth. Not an afterthought, but a necessary addition to the overall complexity of the beer. It really needs to be tried multiple times to truly appreciate all the different flavors that are hiding here, which (wallet willing) I am happy to do. GranvilleTim (465), Granville, Illinois, USA Apr 6, 2009 Cola colered pour with a tan head that exploded during the pour. I served the beer at 45F. At first The aroma was masked and the taste was slightly sweet with a noticeable alcohol presence. I let the beer warm up in my hands and everything changed for the better. The aroma of fruit presented itself, the taste came out in droves, and I felt that now I am tasting a great beer. It had a great aftertaste and mouthfeel. It is/was a tasty beer and worth the effort to get it. The final sip was the best. savnac (393), Palmer, Alaska, USA Apr 6, 2009 Bottle. Intense aroma of prunes, toffee, alcohol and an earthy scent. Dark brown with a big fluffy light brown/tan head. The flavor is full of a sweet caramel and date richness, followed by a tangy sour flavor from the yeast, there is also a very faint alcohol taste. This is a full to medium bodied beer that has a thick creamy texture that is perfectly broken up by a mild carbonation. This is a perplexing beer, very hard to describe, definitely one of the best beers I have had. altehkiller (71), , California, USA Apr 6, 2009 Now this is a truly great trappist ale. Very complex flavors. Lots of raisin, yeast and dark fruits. Enough alcohol to warm you up yet not offend in the slightest. This truly is a special beer! Kestral (191), Oslo, Norway Apr 5, 2009 Pours a dark brown with red highlights and a big light brown head. Looks great. Aroma is toffee malts, vanilla, fruity, raisin/prunes, dates, alcohol, yeast, and more. Flavour is complex. Chocolaty and caramely sweet malts, dark fruits, spices, some vinous qualities, some tiny hints of smoke and wood, with some alcohol heat. Carbonation is lively, but smooth. Feels refreshing, with a medium body. arminjewell (100), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Apr 5, 2009 The best beer I’ve had to this point (March 2009). Poured a deep purple and brown color with tons of yeast, and almost opaque. Aroma was full of chocolate and complex, extremely thick and chewy on the palate. Flavor was outstanding, with chocolate and roasted overtones with an unbelievable amount of dark fruity undertones make this beer an experience. Almost an overwhelming experience, and definitely is best when it is still cold.
