bradlyc77 (226), Sebastopol, California, USA Mar 27, 2009 Pours chunky dark brown with tan head. Aroma is bread/yeast, fig, and booze. Taste is raisin, burnt figs, caramel, alcohol, some spice. Dry finish. Pretty good but not sure if it stood up to all the hype. jesperhammer (260), Copenhagen, Denmark Mar 27, 2009 I have had this a couple of times, and it is a very good beer. Tonight I am drinking it watching X-factor with the family while considering an exclusion of a member of our beerclub.
What could be more appropriate?
Dark brown with high beige head. Sweet smell of al things good, but also a lot of alcohol.
I have a slight cold today, is that why the alcohol is so present?
The mouthfeel, the long aftertaste, and the complexity is awesome.
I woiuld really like to taste this with some years on its back.
This is not the second best beer in the world in my book, but maybe the second best avalable beer in the world.
Coltrane (108), South Carolina, USA Mar 26, 2009 Have had this many times, but I’m rating it against a Westy 12 and Koningshaven Quad. Good company, and unfortunately the Rochefort cant quite hold to the Westy. Then again, what can?
Dark fruits, slight belgian spiciness peaking through. Delicious and warming.
This was the beer I chose to consume on Nov 4, 2008 which was the greatest day of my life, which should give you some idea of the esteem I hold it to. drjay44 (756), Salida, Colorado, USA Mar 25, 2009 330 ml. bottle. Pours medium mocha head of long duration, with attractive lingering lacing over a dark brown (SRM 20) slightly cloudy body.....nose heavy of fruit primarlly cherry, plum....tastes of rich sweet fruits raisin, cherry, plum finishing slightly dry but with lingering fruits including pineapple....mouth feel is medium, carbonation is with a light hand. Alcohol is well hidden. This is really a great beer. ChapelThrill (26), California, USA Mar 25, 2009 Bottle - solid brown pour with light brown head. Aroma of malt, yeast and bread. Taste is complex and hard to describe all things encountered. Noticed coffee, chocolate and a hint of licorice. Some bitterness. Great beer, but in general I enjoyed the 8 more than the 10. givemebeeer (5), erlangar, Kentucky, USA does not count Mar 24, 2009 this only my second trappistes ale iv tasted. the first being westmalle dubbel. which wasnt as good as expected. but i heard good things about the rocheforts. so i gave in again to try this. and well. not disapointed AT ALL. poured into a wine glass. which is the closest thing i had to a trappist glass. very nice pour butl there is alot of carbination in this. dark brown with a off tan head. smelled of malts. and almost bread like. tasted of chocolate. coffee. plums. raisens. grapes. was kinda thin mouthfeel but the 11.2% abv was very well hidden nice bitter finish that leaves a malty fruty taste in your mouth. over all an excellent beer. one of my faves so far! finol (474), Nacka (Stockholm), Sweden Mar 22, 2009 2007 bottle. Pours black with a big quite compact, light brown head.
Smells of malt and belgian yeast. The aroma is kind of stoutisch and vinous at
the same time.
Chocolate, coffe, rosted malts and some sweetness.
Too carbonated and too thin body. trayns (237), Beverly Hills, Michigan, USA Mar 21, 2009 Updated: Jul 3, 2009Bottle. I do not have a palate for Belgians, but I see why this gets so much respect. Pours a deep hazy brown color with a big white head. Aroma is very complex, and hard to describe. Taste is great, hints of malty sweetness, chocolate, and has that Belgian bite that I am not accustomed to just yet. However, I did really enjoy this.
