Ryan82SM (229), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Mar 20, 2009 Aroma is like a kaleidoscope of fruits: ripe plums, tart apple, grape and so much more. High amounts of sediments, not opaque, but a nice dark brown with generous, carbonated head. The initial flavor almost reminds me of a sour ale, but with all the complexities of a quad. Sour apple, brown sugar, licorine and perhaps even some well hidden citrus near the finish. Palate did not make any attempt to hide alcohol, but has a nice spice filled finish. Worth the accolades, but I also understand why Westvleteren is ranked higher. Adam77 (407), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA Mar 18, 2009 Poured dark brown with tan head. Aroma of fruit, spice, and malt. Excellent smell. Flavor started off with some fruit and sweet malt and finished with a spice kick. Complex and smooth. arondee (173), Tucson, Arizona, USA Mar 17, 2009 Poured a dark brown with a big thick brown head. Smells of yeast and fruit. The taste is initially sweet and fruity followed by yeast, a little alcohol and a smoked finish. Very complex taste, very well made beer. amp811 (38), Charleston, South Carolina, USA Mar 17, 2009 Had this one out of a bottle. Opaque with a ruby tint. Gorgeous, sturdy head. Numerous fruit notes. Roll this one around on your tongue a bit, there’s a cascade of flavors coming. Plamadude30k (122), Tucson, Arizona, USA Mar 16, 2009 A dark brown hazy appearance with a substantial light brown head. Aroma is very complex with hints of various sweets, dried fruits, yeast, and a bit of alcohol. Flavor follows suit, but is much more intense. I’ve had other beers this complex, but none are nearly as well balanced as this-they just do it right. Very impressive, a good one for my 50th review. Slayer85 (582), Firenze, Italy Mar 16, 2009 A cloudy dark brown beer with abig, persistent and lacing light brown head. Lots of sediments. The aroma is strong, sweet and malty, with notes of spices (coriander), fruits (plums, figs) and also chocolate and a light hint of alcohol. Extremely complex and enjoyable aroma. The flavour has a high sweetness, and like the nose is very complex and balanced. Powerful, sugary, with much presence of chocolate and also some orange peel and other spices and fruits. The hops are complementary in this beer, malt and yeast are the main characters. Medium to full body, average carbonation, long finish with light to medium bitterness. Lightly alcoholic. A superbly complex beer; fruity, spicy and with a wonderful balance. One of the top beers in the world. A classic IPAGargoyleGuy (139), Troy, NY, New York, USA Mar 13, 2009 Finally, a beer that lives up to the hype. Can’t believe it is 11%. But beyond that, there are flavor’s here I didn’t think i’ve tasted in other brews. Excellent!
