COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The top product from the Rochefort Trappist brewery. Dark color, full and very impressive taste. Strong plum, raisin, and black currant palate, with ascending notes of vinousness and other complexities.

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2007 In the glass its a very dark brown, with a thin creamy head. coats the mouth when you take a sip and sticks to the glass. Very complex flavour, lots going on - an xmas pudding, lots of sultanas and figs, with a hit of orange. This beer felt to me like too much of a good thing, the flavour was heavy and intense, the alcohol was very prominent. Because of this I prefered the lighter 8, which benefited from a more citrus flavour. What can I say - Iím a wuss.

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2008 Easily my favorite Trappist. Iíve had the westy 12, and Iím still partial to this beer. Aroma is just loaded of dried fruits, and sweetness. Flavour is very rich, and very complex, nice spice to it, almost chewy. A beautifully crafted beer, a wonderful warmer. Hides the alcohol very well. Simply superb.

UPDATED: MAY 6, 2008 Iíve had this beer on many occasions, and it is the best Belgian Quad Iíve had to date. This beer needs to be poured and given a few minutes to warm up and breathe. It is only then that the aromas really get going. Aroma is of sweet malts, dark fruits - figs, and yeast. Taste is a bit on the sweet side, but fruit and spice complexity make up for it as this beer warms. Very well balanced and the alcohol is well masked. I would really like to get my hands on aged bottle, as this is the type of beer that would really benefit from it.

330mL bottle. Finally getting around to rating this one... Pours a dark brown; creamy tan head with great retention and lacing. Generous aroma: dried fruits and brown sugar; smells slightly hot. Full, complex mouthfeel: plenty of yeast and esters and dried-fruit; hints of maple syrup, spice and toffee - almost chewy; perfect level of carbonation (lively without being unwieldy); hides its alcohol well. Long, dry finish, showing yeast and spice. Excellent.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2008 Bottle. Nice, thick head and dense black color which light cannot penetrate. Nose of dark chocolate malt with a hint of bubble gum offers a tease of whatís to come. Dried fig on the sweet end, powerful malt on the dry end. Rewardingly bitter finish tangled up with alcohol and faint apples.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2012 This is my desert island brew -- the one I would choose if limited to just one. Read the other ratings for all the complex details on palate, aroma, etc.. If youíve never tasted this, do yourself a favor and do so. Donít over-chill -- even 55 or so F works just fine. Hearty also, especially if you are the one chilled on a raw, wet day. Bliss in a bottle.

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2010 Pour is dark reddish brown, with a nice off-white head. Very good dark fruit, spice, raisin, sweet malt and a hint of caramel. Sweet flavor of plums, dark fruit, raisins, strong spice, sugar, caramel, and yeast. Thick mouthfeel, with a little bit of alcohol. Very complex, damn good ale. One of the best out there.

Bottle dont know the age but itís good till 2011. Pours a copper, brown, muddy beer. Taste is very carbonated. Smells like a sweet mix of raisons, dark rum, sweet apples, sour apples, and grapes. Taste is of all those combined, and topped off with wood, and a fine baked marshmellow cherry devil cake. Lacing on this beer didnt stick as well as i expected. NO malt a bit of hops and a lot of flavor i wish i could describe. I will return with an aged version of this masterpiece.
