4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: FEB 5, 2007 It looks damn fine, deep red with a slightly off-white head - the head is enormous and lasts all the way. Strong vanilla/caramel/chocolate/coffee aroma & a very smooth medium/thick mouthfeel. The taste is complex, malty sweet spicey rasins & vanilla with plum & honey, and much more. Straight ambrosia; this is the best quadruple I’ve ever head. Essential.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
This beer has been described again and again and again. What is the point of doing it again. So instead I am going to focus on the intensity of the goodness. It is really, really good. I mean, better than sex with an ugly person, maybe even better than sex with a pretty person. Yes, this beer is divine, it is worthy of a million odes. Is there a better beer out there? Yes, there is, but I have not tried it yet. People should write poetry about this and the Trappiste monk’s priests should deliver homilies about the virtues of this beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle Dated 11/24/05. Beer poured a very dark, almost opaque brown with a large light brown fluffy head. The head was very full and lasting. A distinct sweetness was evident - notes of chocolate, raisins and candied fruit - cherries? Vinousness notes in the aroma come through during the first sips. The upfront sweetness and notes of candied fruit quickly move to a moderate bitter/alcohol finish. I’d like the finish to be more smooth and it may soften with age. This beer is complex and drinkable. Pull a chair up to the fire and enjoy.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Not as impressive as it is played out to be. Maybe I have a poor batch... carbonation increases and foams in mouth. Aroma is pleasant but palate is awkwardly indistinguishable. I will have to try again.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours darker brown (than the 8) with some sediment. The head is just as big, but thinner and dissipates quickly. Nose is heavier in the malt, with toffee and alcohol prominent. Lighter mouthfeel than the 8. Malts, dates, and currants dominate the taste. Kind of a light cognac finish that comes out as the beer warms, unfortunately so does the alcohol. Both are great, but I like the 8 better.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours a murky dark amber, with a large amount of sediment. Small creamy head with medium to high carbonation. Aroma contains hints of chocolate and a mild spicy fruitiness. The flavor is very similiar and also contains other flavors such as vanilla and tofee. I was amazed at the alcohol level, because the beer goes done so smooth. I am not surprised this is one of the best beers in the world.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottled. Pours a cloudy dark amber with particles at the bottom and a big, lacy, creamy head on top. Aroma of raisins, toffee and alcohol. Creamy medium body with fine carbonation. The flavor start sweet with fruit, vanilla and toffee. Warm and spicy dry finish. The alcohol doesn’t seem well hidden to me, despite various posts to the opposite - maybe because I’m sampling a relatively young bottle? Wifely comments: This is *terrible* beer. Bad, bad, bad beer. (Prolonged grimace.)
