COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The top product from the Rochefort Trappist brewery. Dark color, full and very impressive taste. Strong plum, raisin, and black currant palate, with ascending notes of vinousness and other complexities.

This beer is great. Aroma of raisin, chocolate and sweetness. Taste buds going crazy - too much to absorb. Wow. This beer is truly classic.

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2004 I purchased a single dusty bottle on sale and it looked like it had sat on the shelf for a long time. Turns out that was to my benefit. An intense Quad with a complex range of flavors including bananas, raisins, and plums. More rich and murky than other Belgian Strongs. This is a superb beer that lives up to expectations.

UPDATED: AUG 13, 2005 update March 1st, 2004 Massive beer. Nocturn color with a surprising pale brown head, although it doesn’t last too long. Bouquet is a chocolate melody, the most cocoa from our 6 ABT lineup, dark chocolate with woody, earthy notes and a sharp pencil shavings aspect. Nice complexity for sure, a deep malty sweetness I described as "Vanilla straight from the wood", roasted chocolate cakes notes, controled alcohol (one of the least tasting from our lineup surprisingly), sweet earthy (autumn leaves?) nectar, everything is balanced with a fitting solid body bearing an above average carbonation. A Classic.

I love it!! Definitely one of my favorites (thus far) and one to revisit once aged. I think my sample was a bit alcoholic than most rated. More than a hint of bourbon, very dark/roasted malts. Sticky, overripe plums and some candied orange. I'm going to try an aged one and rerate.

A very intricate beer with lots of fruit involved, raisins with a definite floral aroma. This is truly a world class beer, amust try for the true trappist connosoir.

(33cl bottle) Dark brown with a small, brown head. Constant, non-dissipating delicious cobweb of laced foam. Prunes, bananas, raisons, cask whiskey, cotton candy, sweet malt and floral hops. Smooth with amazing flavour spun into alcohol. Finishes creamy with a smooth malt. Delicious...

Pruny brown/purple color. Aroma is very musky with a light tinge of perfume (rose petals)--smells like a men's cologne. I was very excited about this after taking in the appearance and aroma but was very disappointed with the flavor. Maybe I have a dumbed-down palate, but I did not find a great deal of complexity here; certainly not as much as in other Belgians I've tried. The flavor was syrupy and spicy, with a bit of raspberry syrup thrown in, and overbearingly alcoholic. In fact, this beer tastes more alcoholic than any I've ever tried other than the WWS 23%. The mouthfeel was very nice but could not make up for the lack of articulated flavors. It was like being hit by a wall of one flavor, albeit a very nice, rather than having the symphony I've experienced in other Trappist beers. I was hoping to be 5'd, after trying the similarly high-rated (and excellent) Westvletern 12 twice (but not rating it), but I left disappointed. I would not have been disappointed if it weren't for the expectations I've built up. I'll give it another try sometime.

UPDATED: MAY 1, 2009 Deep brown. Strong but creamy aroma and taste. Grainy, very apparent alcohol. Flavors of plum, nutmeg, blackberries, soy sauce. Very smooth in the mouth, but the aroma is drowned in alcohol.

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2006 It finally happened. After countless dodgy bottles (and a few tantalisingly good samples) in Australia, I had a bottle (in Mons) in perfect condition and the beer was magnificent. I didn’t take proper notes but really it was just like the 8 only bigger. Bucketloads of that crazy Rochefort yeast character with an equal helping of big, silky malt without ever being cloying. Way better than Westy 12, in my book. Great stuff, just don’t make it the last beer of a big night and go straight to bed afterwards!
