My special birthday beer. 11.2 ounce bottle in Chimay glass. Dark brown with lasting head and some lace. Toasted caramel port wine wood earth yeasty bread aroma. Rich warm caramelized brown sugar raisin tobacco port wine slight alcohol warmth. Medium-full body and low carbo (and warm) makes for a perfect soft mouthfeel. An amazing beer. Sweet without cloying. Fruity without being syrupy. Deserving of the high rating. Amazing how much better this is than run-of-the-mill quads or Belgian dark strongs.

This is a great one and easy to find to boot. Very complex. Rich brown with tan head. Malt, cheery, chocolate, prunes, yeast, and plums. Smooth with a touch of alcohol burn. Always some sediment in the bottle. I wish the bottles were bigger.

341ml bottle. Pourd brown almost black. Big foamy brownish lacing head. Rich and unique aroma. Hint of caramel and fruits. Bit of alcohol as well. Lots of stuff i can’t identify. Taste is rich and sweet. hint of cherries. Finish is warm alcohol. Tiny bitterness. Bit dry at the end Awesomely well balanced. To me, this is the definition of balanced beer. Perfect untill the end of the glass This really is my type of beer. Will have to rerate once I have tasted more top beers. Could give it a 5 but it would be a bit presomptuous of me with so few ratings. Rating #24

Pours deep chocolate color, and opaque. Aromas of sweet malt, caramelized sugar, cherry, and a touch of ethanol. Flavor is complex, with fruit and sweetness dominating. Bubble gum mixed with dark fruit, and dry leaves. Also a touch of very light coffee. This is quite good, and the 11% abv is not even noticeable.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown with a large, foamy, lighter tan head. Nose is sweet malt with some raisin and plum tones., hard candy notes too. Taste is wonderfully sweet, almost cotton candy, sweet currants and raisin flavors very strong as well. Bready yeast flavors come in a little later but the sweetness is still there. Mouth is heavy with the carbonation, and a medium alcohol burn that becomes more of a burnt finish. Excellent beer. Side note: I don’t understand how the monks can handle the alcohol of these beer while they are fasting.

11.2 oz. bottle courtesy of lamas. Poured very deep brown with thin, fizzy head. Looks almost a bit oily. Nose of sweet candy sugar. Deep fruity flavors with plums, raisins, figs. Very earthy. Medium body with a strong level of carbonation that tingles the tongue. Just the slightest alcohol burn at the finish. VERY drinkable for such a complex brew. Strong work Rochefort monks!

My first Abt/Quad and I must say I’m sad I might not find another better than this. Hopefully everyone here can help me prove myself wrong. Deep brown in color and has an lovely sticking head. Smoothness is shocking considering the alcohol content. Yet, the strong malty character of this beer is pleasingly contrasted with a tang I can’t quite nail down. Outstanding brew.

Bottle into chalice. Pours a murky, rich dark purplish-brown, with a magnificent, pillowy two-finger khaki head on top. The head reduces to a thick, creamy khaki cap that leaves substantial lacing. Very nice. Nose is hard to get a grip on - nutty, bit of cocoa, primarily brown sugar, spicy dark fruit, and doughy yeast. What’s there is fantastic. Taste is full, rich, complex, and yet perfectly in sync with itself, if that makes sense. Notes of cocoa and spiced brown sugar, raisins and dates, doughy, spicy yeast, with a mild earthy bitterness coming out to join the fray right before the finish. Finish is sweet, spicy, yeast with some sweet raisin notes. Fairly short finish, warming, just a bit of alcohol underneath. Subtle but big in flavor, all while being very approachable. Mouthfeel is creamy and fluffy, perfectly executed, full mouthfeel without being syrupy. Almost no hint of the alcohol in this one. Even at 11%, I’d have no problem drinking several bottles of this. Masterful.
