4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Dark black with almost no head. Heavy, fruity aroma. The taste is rather complex with many flavors present. The flavor starts with a bit of sweetness and I then get a bit of spice. you can taste the alcohol in the after taste but not enough to bother me. Overall I found this to be a very enjoyable beer.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: MAY 8, 2008 I’ve had this beer over two dozen times probably since first trying it. This is a regular beer for me and my go-to beer when I’m in the mood for a dark Belgian. I’ve had several blind tastings with this versus St Bernardus 12 and this is the clear winner I think. My first rating for this was a little simplistic so I wanted to do this beer justice by rating it again.
Pours very dark brown with a large and excellently retained off-white head. Lacing and carbonation are intense. Aroma is piney, sweet, plums, vanilla, lavender with some chocolate and raisins in there for good measure. Strawberry jam, figs. Just a great and unique aroma, super complex. Taste is similar to the aroma, matching its complexities and containing the same adjectives for the flavor. This is amazing.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: APR 30, 2011 . Magnificent dark cloudy appearance. Big aroma, sweet with caramel and currents. Full, bodiy, quite syrupy. it tastes elegant, nuanced and restrained, yet it is still a big beer. Mild roasted flavours, caramel and currents again, also spicy and fruity and some vanilla. Tha alcohol is warming on the finish.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours like liquid silk. Dark dark dark brown with a lovely foamy head. Smells of raisins, cinnamon and cardamom. Flavor has more spices; nutmeg, clove. Thick velvety mouthfeel. Tastes of alcohol in the finish, but I didn’t mind so much. This was a wonderful beer all around.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: FEB 19, 2007 Rating 100, bottle from the Evil Eye in York. Pours an immense, rocky, and classically Rochefort tan-tinged head with huge bubbles. The edges fade before the middle, leaving a plateau of foam on top of a dark brown beer with ruby highlights. Slight sediment despite leaving the last few ounces in the bottle. Aroma is mild at first but picks up as this warms: clove, cinnamon, a slight earthy must, dark stone fruits and candy. More than slightly tinged with alcohol, making my nose tickle. I needed to fend off the head to get to the nectar below. Once I finally did, I was hit with loads of spice - clove, nutmeg, black pepper - all of which have a lasting stay on the tongue. Plums and raisins predominate but this is not overly sweet as the spice balances it well. Slight pine, finish is caramel and slightly burnt notes with a mild bitterness. Slightly warming with an unfortunately boozy, moderate alcohol presence that was detectable and approached taking away from the enjoyment. Quite similar to 8 with the slight alcohol presence that is unfelt in the younger brother.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Milk chocolate brown in color with thick diminishing head. Head is an awesome marbled tan with dark brown veins. A lot of floaties and little lacing. Aroma is rich and vinous with some fruit and alcohol showing. Flavor is similar- very strong malty and fruit filled. Some alcohol notes, especially that pinch in the back of the throat and some tongue numbing. Oily, thick mouthfeel. All around really great. I think I enjoyed the 8 more because the alcohol wasn’t as noticeable, but the little extra buzz is worth it

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
(from notes) Bottle. Pours cloudy brown, thin brown head. Nose is fruity and sweet, almost like a fruit roll-up or similar candy. Carbonation present in opening, folds into an extremely smooth sweetness. Smoky, light caramel notes. Really top notch.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours dark brown and cloudy from a 330. Minimal head, beige in color. A little carbonation is apparent, though not much. Smell is like the 8...bananas, chocolate, roasted malt. Flavor is bananas and chocolate again, with a thick mouthfeel. Not overly sweet. Alcohol baby burn. Great brew, but I may prefer the 8.
