4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 haukur (1009) - Reykjavik, ICELAND - APR 13, 2003
UPDATED: APR 28, 2004 Wow! what a beer! I am very tempted to give this a perfect score. It poured a very dark color and a quite thick head. The smell of the beer was close to perfection, so many things going on in my nose when I smelled that, next was to have nice mouthful of this, and that was something to remember. I dont know quite to describe it. There was a party of taste in my mouth and everybody was invited!! a bit chocolate taste, hints of fruits and raisins, this is something to have again and again. You cant feel the alcahol, very well masked, but this something that should only be enjoyd as a night cap or a dessert. Thanks to Eirikur to introduce me to this fest of a beer!

Wow. Those Belgians don't mess around. Thank God for Ohio changing its beer laws.

On a Sunny Sunday arvo at a Belgian Beer Cafe in Melbourne, I stumbled upon one of the holy grails of Beer, this one! But I was well let down by the hype of this beer. Its pours a lovely dark brown color and beautiful looking head, sweet smelling aroma, tastes of plum and raisin and the ABV is excellently masked in this brew. The flavors came through better once it warmed. The price for this drop was ridiculous. I would love to try it again, maybe while watching my AFL team the "Swans" kicking some other teams butt, while not being in such a critical mood.

Spongy, tight packed head. The head is light brown/tan in color. It looks like it will stick around for a little while. The aroma is yeasty with hints of raisins and plums. Overall, a fairly sweet aroma with an undertone of alcohol. The color is fairly dark brown, like a monk's robe. The alcohol in the flavor is concealed well. There seems to be a residule film in my mouth that diminishes quickly. There is a sweetness in the brew that is just right, not too much or little. This seems significantly different than the Rochefort 8, a little heavier. Overall, this ale is great, but still not a Westy 12, in my opinion anyway.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DavidP (1745) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 29, 2003
UPDATED: FEB 19, 2004 Thick tan head, stuck around for the duration of the beer. Aroma has a strong alcohol note along with raisins, green apple and plum. Sweet dark sugary notes as well. The flavor also features an agressive alcohol taste. Roasty biscuit amd apple peel are also plesant. Finishes with some chocolate bitterness. I don't see what the big deal is about this beer - too much alcohol flavor for not much depth of flavor.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Gunshy (479) - Ohio, USA - MAR 29, 2003
This beer poured a very dark brown color and formed an light tan bubbly head that left some lace. An aroma of malt, plum, raisins and spice. A flavor of malt and spice with some fruit element plus you can detect the presence of the alcohol and it's warming effect comes through in a tart finish that hints at heavy carbonation being present. This is by far the best of the three of theirs that I have tried. Thanks again to the Ohio lawmakers for letting us get this.

UPDATED: APR 1, 2003 Beautiful dark ruby color with a nice off-white head. The aroma was bursting with all kinds of fruits...plums, apricots, grapes. Behind the fruit was a nice vanilla/ bubble gum, sugary sweet character. The flavor was very sweet...fruity (more plums)...vanilla...very subtle peppery/spiciness. I really didn't notice the alcohol at all. Wet feel with a long aftertaste. Wonderful experience!
5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 joeycapps (1468) - Waterdown, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 13, 2003
First thing I noticed was its sizzle. Best sounding beer I've had it a while. Otherwise: thick, opaque chocolate brown w/ powder-like sediment & lively beige head. Wonderfully complex nose with bubble gum, cookie dough, & toffee. Soft, full-bodied feel. Flavours are equally as complex as aroma if not more so. I'm getting cocoa, sweet dark fruit, brandy, toffee, cookie dough, pepper & vanilla. The alcohol is noticeable (perhaps not as well hidden as in the 8) and the finish is sweet yet dry w/ a lovely hint of hops.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Frank (2188) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 13, 2003
Muddy orange brown color with a dense haze of carbonation and particulates. Off white head with light brown blotches. Boozy, rum-raisin aroma. Somewhat sticky and a bit thinner on the palate than I had hoped for but soft, smooth carbonation helps to make up for it. Nice candi sugar sweetness. The thing I notice most is the medicinal alcoholic burn on my toung. Looking past that, there is a certain magic to the chemistry between the vinous raisiny quality and the subdued hop bitterness in the finish.
