mbsmith (22), Missouri, USA Jan 28, 2009 First rating after much waiting and contemplation- this is the best widely available beer known to man. Beautiful, complex Belgian with strong dark fruit notes- plum/prune stands out the most to me. Somewhat inconsistent (availability and quality) in the States but i’ll blame that on the shipping/distribution rather than the monks. Even if you get a "bad" bottle (aka really freaking good but not as good as some of them) you win. This beer makes you feel blessed. Life is complete. Anker (305), Hillerød, Denmark Jan 28, 2009 Updated: Feb 7, 2009Bottle. Pours dark cloudy brown with medium head. Aroma is sugar candy, caramel, raisins and prune. Very complex!
Flavor is full bodied and sweet with notes of caramel, raisins and spices. Its awesomely balanced and the alcohol is very well hidden. An absolutely fantastic brew! jtheye (12), Roeland Park, Kansas, USA Jan 27, 2009 I poured the whole bottle in my glass and dang that’s chunky! This is a great beer, though. I wish I could afford to drink it all the time! I’m a homebrewer, so this one’s on my list to replicate!
Biggness (3), Medford, New York, USA does not count Jan 27, 2009 This beer pours an incredibly dark and cloudy brown with a 1 fingered light tan head and some lacing. The smell is of raisins and molasses. The flavor is big, there is no shortage of malt in this beer, and certainly alot of dark malts, certainly the darkest quad I have ever tried. There are big hints of raisins and plums int he flavor backed with an enormous malt base... also this beer is quite sweet. The mouthfeel is decent with a rather low carbonation level and for an 11.3% abv beer this beer is HIGHLY drinkable :)
Headbanger (1574), Aurora, Illinois, USA Jan 26, 2009 22cl courtesy of kkearn-Pours a dark brown body with a nice tan head. Aroma of caramel, plum, raisin, and a little alcohol. Taste of the same with some yeast, sugar, and sweetness. This full bodied brew is quite smooth and well balanced. Damn good. teddybeer (16), Spain Jan 25, 2009 Bottle 33cl: dark brown appearance with a large head. Aroma to caramel, the flavor some spicy with notes of caramel too, sweet sugar and fruits. Sweet wineus and malty taste. GOOOOD!!! Wynne (22), , Pennsylvania, USA Jan 24, 2009 Updated: Apr 15, 2009Aroma is dark candied fruits, somewhat figgy, with some apple pie. Color is an opaque dark brown. Flavor is so powerful when cold that it actually tingles against the tongue. Nutmeg, clove, yeast, raisins, red wine, orange peel, cinnamon, overripe banana, and malt hit my tongue as well as alcohol. The candied dark fruits and banana were the strongest; the beer is both hard-hitting and sweet. A little too powerful and sugary when cold. My guess is that it is nicer with age, but as it warmed it became very palatable and appealing--the flavors somehow blend magically together with a bit less chill. When it was too cold I was feeling a bit irritated about all the hype over this beer, but at the right temperature it makes sense. A true trappist, and I’d say one of the best. And with further tests, I’ve liked it even more. hallinghansen (263), Odense SV, Denmark Jan 24, 2009 Bottle. dark nutty brown body, with a very long lasting off-white head. Aroma is sweet, sugar candy/caramel/molasses, notes of dark fruits, spices, and much more wich I can´t define. Flavor is sweet caramel/molasses/sugar candy, spices, alcohol. This is one of the best beers I´ve ever had. It´s smooth, complex, perfect.
