I wish I could afford to drink it all the time! I’m a homebrewer, so this one’s on my list to replicate!

The smell is of raisins and molasses. The flavor is big, there is no shortage of malt in this beer, and certainly alot of dark malts, certainly the darkest quad I have ever tried. There are big hints of raisins and plums int he flavor backed with an enormous malt base... also this beer is quite sweet. The mouthfeel is decent with a rather low carbonation level and for an 11.3% abv beer this beer is HIGHLY drinkable :)

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 24, 2009 Updated: Apr 15, 2009Aroma is dark candied fruits, somewhat figgy, with some apple pie. Color is an opaque dark brown. Flavor is so powerful when cold that it actually tingles against the tongue. Nutmeg, clove, yeast, raisins, red wine, orange peel, cinnamon, overripe banana, and malt hit my tongue as well as alcohol. The candied dark fruits and banana were the strongest; the beer is both hard-hitting and sweet. A little too powerful and sugary when cold. My guess is that it is nicer with age, but as it warmed it became very palatable and appealing--the flavors somehow blend magically together with a bit less chill. When it was too cold I was feeling a bit irritated about all the hype over this beer, but at the right temperature it makes sense. A true trappist, and I’d say one of the best. And with further tests, I’ve liked it even more. hallinghansen (265), Odense SV, Denmark

| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jan 24, 2009 For some reason I haven’t had this beer in a couple of years even though it is probably my current favorite beer. Pours dark chocolate brown with greenish amber highlights and a 2 finger foamy tan head that has fair retention and regenerates hugely when swirled. Aroma is of caramel, dark sugar, cherries, dried plums, raspberry, straw, white tea, lots of raisin, juicy fruit gum, grass, a little citrus, straw, funky grain, melon, earth... You could go on forever finding new aroma notes in this beer. Flavor is just as complex and fantastically good. Toasted grain, dark caramel, earthy dried leaves, plum, apple, tons of floral hops, citrus potpourri, molasses, walnuts, old burlap, straw, very light cinamon, rye bread, candi sugar, wet late season hay fields, earthy and herbal hops toward the finish, again I could go on but am reaching the end of the bottle. Palate is like drinking sweet cream, if my mouth were made of silk, a dryish slightly spicy finish, alcohol warmth is present but alcohol bite is never apparent, which at 11.3%abv is quite a feat. A really fantastic beer that has never let me down.
