elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA Nov 20, 2008 11/8/08 notes: Always exciting when you get to try something as highly touted as this. Pours brown with floating yeast and a large, pearly head. Rich aroma of bread, yeast, caramel malt, brown sugar, and grains. Perhaps some dark fruit in there as well, such as raisins. Full-bodied flavor with rich nuttiness, sweet fruit, and intense bread/yeast. Mid-palate is very mellow, with a vinous sweetness. Finish features a lingering sweetness that is surprisingly fruity, with wood, alcohol, and malt. Beautiful blend. kennydiaz (182), staten island, New York, USA Nov 20, 2008 ONE OF THE WORLDS BEST. A LOT OF COMPLEX SUGARS AND A HINT OF CARAMEL. I PERSONALLY LIKE THE 8 BETTER. FOR THE STYLE OF BEER OF BEER THOUGH I PREFER ST. BERNARDUS ABT 12 FOR BOTH TASTE AND COST VALUE. Caleb1035 (63), , North Carolina, USA Nov 20, 2008 330 ml bottle at Monks in Philly. This is an excellent beer...everyone at the table agreed. Dark, rich with wonderful aroma and taste. michael-pollack (2601), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 18, 2008 330ml Bottle: Aroma of light funk, dark ripe fruits, stinky Limburg cheese, alcohol, yogurt, malts, and yeast, Poured brown (mahogany) in color with a small, fizzy, dense, light brown head that lasted throughout. Cloudy. Sparkling. Fully of tiny particles throughout as well as many very large particles. No lacing. Flavor is lightly bitter. Tastes of butter, malts, caramel, light alcohol, dried dark fruits, yeast, stinky cheese, light funk, and raisin. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Funky, malty, finish. 11.3%ABV is well hidden. Archibaldo de la Cruz (394), Finland Nov 2, 2008 Bottle, BB 27.08.13. Dark brown colour with a medium lasting tan head. Malty aroma with hints of plum and spices. The flavour is malt, pepper, plum, yeast and raisin with notes of alcohol. Quite full-bodied and smooth mouthfeel. Delicious brew. ceffalo (38), , Texas, USA Oct 31, 2008 Poors a great dark brown. A spicy aroma in the nose. Nice full head. Fabulous taste of caramel, malt, and nuts with a touch of wood. Warm and flavorful beer. Highly recommended. fidel (884), Livermore, California, USA Oct 27, 2008 Updated: May 31, 2009Dark brown, roasted malts, dark fruits, caramel, nutty, little spice, little wood, little alcohol, slight coffee, slight licorice. benpickens (129), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Oct 26, 2008 Pours a huge creamy head with an almost black body. Faint aromas of cola and spice. Dry coffeish flavor with a malty finish. Good beer, but like St Bernardus’ rendition of the style much better because it is a much fruitier beer and less dry.
