The top product from the Rochefort Trappist brewery. Dark color, full and very impressive taste. Strong plum, raisin, and black currant palate, with ascending notes of vinousness and other complexities.

Wonderfully complex brew filled with figs and plums in both aroma and flavor. Nicely balanced sweetness and barely any noticeable alcohol until the chest. Long dried fruit aftertaste.

Licht bitterige afdronk. Heerlijke trappist!

Cloudy brown with some suspended sediment as I poured the whole bottle into the glass. Taste of plums, raisins, currents and baked apples and cherries, caramel, dark malts. The high alcohol content is hidden well, no more noticable than in the 8. Aroma matches taste but needs to warm up before any aroma is noticable.

Bottle with some age, best before february 2016. Poured in my rarely used Trois-Pistoles goblet. Brown pour with lasting pale beige offwhite head. Aroma is raisins, plums and belgian yeast. Iím also getting some well integrated chocolate/caramel. Taste is along the same lines with mostly dried fruits. The main feature isnít sweetness, it remains relatively dry even with the intense dried fruits flavors. It is slightly tart and there is a substansive alcool warmth. Some old ale notes: Tobacco, port (slight oxydation from the age). Palate feels a little light with high carbonation which I donít appreciate is such a big beer. It is still well done considering the belgian strong ale category. A stellar example of a style Iím not fond of.

Foam head disappears after a few seconds and hardly leaves anything. Color is very (very!) dark brown, very pretty. Complex aroma. Chocolate is the most noticeable but there are notes of raisins and I would even say it resembles yoghurt somehow (?). Not going to add a lot now since Iím really not experienced enough to describe the taste. Iíll just say this is my favorite beer.

I had tried this beer several years ago, and found it to be unremarkable. Now, several years later, I spotted all the glowing reviews this brew seems to draw. So I tried it once again, in hopes that I might have missed something the first time. I didn't. This brown Trappist Ale pours with no head, no aroma, slightly sour, and thin on flavor. Will not be trying again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
