kseecs16 (865), Naperville, Illinois, USA Jul 10, 2008 Updated: Sep 5, 2008I figured it was time for me to try the Rochefort beers so I picked up one of each this last weekend and sat down to enjoy. My overall impression was that these are solid beers but I was not amazed. The 10 pours a very dark brown with a big creamy tan head, it would not lace the glass. A little yeast remained in the bottle which I agitated and dumped in. Full flavored with a rich spicy flavor hints of chocolate and some sour citric notes. Full creamy body and more full flavor profile differentiate this from the 8. Very good. ATLBeerDog (280), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 9, 2008 Pours dark brown, root beer color - very cloudy. It has a 1/16 inch, off white head. Smells of toasted malts, nuts, and herbal hops. First sip is creamy, smooooth, complex – almost chewy. This beer blows my mind. It tastes strong as the 11.3% ABV is not hidden - it is in your face, yet it tastes kind of light and somehow this brew is so damn creamy. mrw1zard (54), Birmingham, Alabama, USA Jul 9, 2008 Pours a solid black/dark brown. Taste of raisins, brown sugar with a slight alcohol taste. Very very nice as an after dinner brew. Bigmmartin (366), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jul 7, 2008 Updated: Sep 11, 2009Bottle [100th Rating]. I’ve been saving this one for a few months, waiting for my 100th. Color is mixture of dark red, purple, and brown. Has an excellent, long lasting, light tan head with lacing the grips the glass and refuses to let go. Aroma has a sweet malt with dark fruit followed by some alcohol. Has sweet, brown sugar, malt, and dark fruit flavors.Has a great palate with perfect carbonation, however has a more prominent alcohol presence when compared to the younger cousin. Definitely a strong, robust Belgian Quad, although I think I actually prefer the awesome balance and subtlety of the alcohol of the Rochefort 8. thejoeshow (232), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Jul 6, 2008 330ml bottle. Pours a deep dark brown color with little hints of amber. There is a VERY nice beige head that has excellent retention and lacing. The nose is raisin and almost fruity, it has a very complex aroma that I can’t really only describe as deep. Flavor is all over the place. Very complex. The "commercial" description of "Strong plum, raisin, and black currant" pretty much nails it. There is a sweetness to it but it is nice and mellow, not sweet like you would think. There is also a very subtle bitterness to it that is not even close to over powering. Very nicely balanced. This truly is an extremely unique beer that is a treat to drink. The funny part about this beer is that while you are drinking it you forget this bad boy packs a punch, weighing in at 11.3% alc by vol. wow! You would never know...until the end of the glass. MuttyD (93), Cambridge, USA Jul 6, 2008 Perfection in a bottle. Cloudy brown, big foamy head. Aroma really opens up when drank in the proper glass. Smooth on the palate with huge amounts of raisins, brown sugar, sweet fruit. Excellent syrupy/sticky finish. Truly a world class beer. aplusbreaks (330), , Colorado, USA Jul 6, 2008 Bottle thanks to me! Poured into a trappist glass o so beautifully, Dark brown almost raisin like. A small but firm and lasting tan head. And dont forget the chunks of yeast that ended up in the glass. Aromas of raisins, dark fruit, some spice and alcohol. The taste was nothing short of delicious. extremely complex and each sip varies. A nice sweet brew with raisins and dark fruits, and a fairly hot finish. Sweet but not to sweet. I will be going back for more and cellaring as much as possible, if I can keep my hands off it for that long! DutchCrow (20), Alkmaar, Netherlands Jul 1, 2008 Two bottles at Beermuseum De Boom in Alkmaar. Really good. Normally I’m not a big fan of beers with more than 10% of alcohol, but this one is great. You don’t have that strong alcoholic scent (although you’ll feel it afterwards, haha!) The taste is very special. It’s not as sweet as other beers, but also not too bitter. Just a perfect balance. Enjoy!
