Frauditor (148), Hagerstown, Maryland, USA Jun 21, 2008 bottle from bobby - thanks man! This is probably the best beer I have had to date. it is so smooth for all that goes in to the bottle. palate is silky and sugary tastes come through just right. smell is roasted figs, coffee, and other fruits. the abv dances magnificently between the sips of a sunshine samba. inkubus27 (237), Highland, Indiana, USA Jun 20, 2008 I just can’t get excited about this or many of the highly attenuated belgians. The body is very thin and the alcohol seems blatantly obvious, especially in the nose. There are some nice sweet flavors and dark fruit aromas. It does finish pretty easily for a beer this strong. Bottom line, I tried to rate this as high as I could, but couldn’t find a true appreciation for it. craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Jun 19, 2008 bottle. quite delicious.... I don’t fully agree with the 100 percentile, but it is damn good. pours a deep brown with a nice 1/4" white/tan head.... which lasts throughout at about half that. wonderful appearance. pleasant aromas of dark fruits, malts and some sugar. These aromas make their way over the tongue as well along with some caramel, plums and yeast. Very soft on the palate, big carbonation on the top of the tongue and extremely drinkable. The finish is strong and has a bit of alcohol to it. The 11% is not present until the finish. Overall, this is one of the best beers available, but I was hoping for just a bit more from it on the palate. Dansting (222), Overland Park, Kansas, USA Jun 19, 2008 Bottle purchased locally. Poured a cloudy purplish-brown color with a medium light-brown head. Aroma is malty with a hint of brown sugar and sweet spices. Mouthfeel is kinda fizzy. Flavor is heavy in alcohol, with some fruit and it. However, this isn’t that good. I think I got a bad bottle, because it tastes kinda rough and yeasty (and I poured it correctly). I will give this another shot, because this one wasn’t anywhere close to the other trappist beers I’ve had. Joakgust (320), Stockholm, Sweden Jun 16, 2008 33cl bottle - Good sized brown amberish head. Enormous aroma with hints of chocolate and dried fruits. Have been storing for 6 months and will continue for another 6. Heard from a person that its better than the Westvleteren after a year.... oreogobbler (216), Austin, Texas, USA Jun 15, 2008 Pours a cloudy dark brown. Thin to almost not head. Smell of strawberries, alcohol, and dark berries. The flavor is so thick and spicy with a wonderful wood like finish. The palate is somewhat thick and smooth. I cannot taste the amount of alcohol that the label say. One extra point for that! hiphop (84), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 15, 2008 I’ve known for a long time this is truly the best beer I have ever had, even before I was peer-pressured by the ratebeer.com clan. Truly a remarkable trappist offering. I’ve had 4 in my time, and I will surely update this rating next time I have one, because it is so deep that it requires immediate attention. I recall tons of dark fruits, solid malt backbone, and a prickling tongue that makes any beer enthusiast enthralled. 502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jun 15, 2008 11.2 oz. bottle into sniffer. Dark nut brown with a pretty substantial head that holds impressively long. Plum, alcohol, honey, raisins, cherries, sugary candy, cordial, and some doughy malt on the nose - very appealing aroma. Crazy complex flavor - black licorice, vanilla, honey, sugar plums, alcohol, and more. Smooth on the palate with soft carbonation - medium bodied. I’m not a quad guy really. I always have appreciated the complexity but haven;t really (absolutely) loved the taste, but this this is crazy good. I actually like this better than I thought I would.
